Guild notice—Use of barges

By our Lady Director request, all rune guild members are reminded that most guild members' travel and the deliveries we receive of crafting materials should be done through canal or river barges.   Yes, we do have a special partnership with governmental transportation portals and you are free to fill autorisation request forms regarding them. However, you are all reminded that their use is reserved for urgent and essential transport unless you are willing to pay for them yourself! Otherwise, you will have to slum it with the rest of us.   Thanks to the numerous canals that have been built to link all of our rivers together, barges easily travel throughout all of Nélannie, and travelling through them can be perfectly safe and comfortable if you know what you are doing. Here is a reminder.

Build

Dimensions
Because of the Nélannian gauge that determines the size of canal locks and bridges:

  • Flat-bottom (max 1.8m draught)
  • Long length (max 38.50m)
  • Small breadth (max 5.05m)

  • Transport
The bridge is made of sliding or removable panels that hide a big hold that can carry 300-350 tons of cargo.   The cabin is shared by all sailors & passengers on board.

    Traction
Animals (horses, donkeys, cows) tract barges from the banks.   Expensive option: a back propeller that sailors feed with magic they take manually from a reserve of magic-absorbant materials.

    How to book a travel

    For poor people
Go to the nearest harbour & find a barge captain to see if they have space left & negotiate your fare.   Advantages: Cheaper, quicker to find a barge with a space while in a hurry.   Inconvenients: Suspicious people out to scam, rob or kill you in your sleep.

    For respectable individuals
Contact one of the well-known merchants who own a fleet of barges to book a space in one of them.   Advantages: Guarantee of safety, quality of lodging & care for your goods..   Inconvenients: Prices can climb quickly, need to book at least a few days in advance.

Contact the guild administrator's office to be put in contact with our merchant partners.

I like one of the cons for 'poor people' is that you might be murdered in your sleep.   Canals! <3

You never know what can happen when you're isolated in the middle of nowhere with nobody knowing who you're with :p   Canals are fun :D Shame we don't use them so much anymore :(

I love this. I've always liked river boats.

Thanks :D The canal in the pic actually goes a bit behind my parents house, so we walk there often. The pic shows a boat, but I've never seen them actually there XD and I always thought it was shame that the canals are not really used anymore even though the locks are still working well and have even been replaced recently...

In that case, your parents live in a very beautiful area.   I've got a couple of places in my world where people primarily use river boats. I used to live in the New Orleans area, so that may have influenced my love of them. Hope the folks near your parents come to their senses XD

Such a clever and humorous article! I love the way you've formatted it, it's eye catching and intuitive, and really makes the article flow well.

Thanks a lot! I've been having a lot of fun trying to find other ways to present articles in this world to make them more interesting to write and read :D

I giggled for the use of the emoji for the respectable people.

I also laughed at my own very good idea when I did that XD Judgemental Victorian gentlemen with monocles are very respectable indeed :p
