The sundering of the Queen of Monsters created the first dragons, the first mortal arcane casters; and also warped the natural magics she'd shepherded, birthing the monsters. This arcane magic did not include the school of necromancy, which was created much later, during the curse. At this point, the line between life and death was the purview solely of divine magic.

Diplomatic actionWith the discovery of and obsession with collecting gemstones, many dragons discovered that humanoids, especially Dwarves, were quite useful for extracting gemstones. Red Dragons and Blue Dragons especially made extensive use of humanoid slaves to mine rubies and sapphires and all kinds of precious gemstones.

The Forge Gods created the metallic dragons in an attempt to make dragons less troublesome. When they tried to force all dragons to be reforged into metallic dragons, the chromatic dragons objected, and stole the tools of the forge gods to use in a ritual locking the gods out of the Material Plane. A war between metallic and chromatic dragons ensued.
