Hakan Larssen
King Haakan Larssen is the great-grandfather of King Einar Tachibana Larsson and founder of the kingdom of Sudland. Haakan Larssen was a duke of Nodyund, the youngest of the royal family. He was driven out of Nodyund by his eldest brother in a power struggle for the throne, narrowly escaping with his life. With a fleet of twenty longships and 500 men, he set sail from Seihabn, across the Inner Sea to Vominto. The fierce reputation of the Nodyunders preceded him, and he and his men were not welcomed at any port along the western coast of Voatyon nor Teiyon. Sailing south along the coast, his fleet eventually turned east along the southern coast of the Scorpion's Tail, and passed through the Stepping Stones into the Black Dragon Sea. Following the east coast of the Scorpion's Tail, heading north, they were attacked by ships from Yfel, costing them many lives and injuries. Ships carrying food and fresh water were sunk. Forced away from the coast of Yfel, and in dire circumstances, they continued northeast, past The Dragon's Eye, and sailed into the port of Sudminto.
At that time, Sudland was not united under a single ruler. Southport was also much smaller. The towns around Southport were constantly harassed and attacked by bands of Orkrim. The people of the area had never before encountered people from Nodyund and so did not fear them, as the people of Danyund, Voatyon, and Teiyon did. Meeting the ruler of Southport at the time, Lord-Mayor Tachibana Jang Hideo, Haakan Larssen pledged fealty in return for food, lodging, and supplies for he and his men.
Over the next five years, Larssen and his men, being fierce and fearless warriors, became the core of the Southport guards. They pacified the surrounding region, drove the Orkrim bands away, and brought prosperity to the region around Southport. Even though a foreigner, Larssen was greatly admired by the people of Southport. Tachibana was grateful, but despite Larssen's sworn and demonstrated loyalty, he was also somewhat fearful. Having no sons, Tachibana wanted to preserve the political power he had, so he decided to ally his family with Larssen. At a solemn ceremony, he declared that the house of Tachibana and the house of Larssen would forever be allied, and he gave his eldest daughter, Hime Tori Tachibana to Larssen as his wife, and adopted Larssen as his legal son. From that time on, the house of Tachibana-Larssen expanded its base out from Southport, eventually conquering all of the area now known as Sudland.
At the The Battle of Daskar, Larssen and his army, led by his brothers and his loyal lieutentant, Earl Hans Ravndal, defeated the army of the city-state of Daskar. After consolidating his victory, he wisely sought peace with the royalty and people of Daskar and won their loyalty. He established himself as king of the new kingdom of Sudland.
