San Hagirim
San Hagirim (Mountain Hags) are a powerful subtype of Okkurim and are protectors of mountains, hills, and other highlands. In their native form, they look like brown-skinned, ugly Human or Elvirim women, but they often appear as young, beautiful women to Humans they encounter.
Though they often appear to Humans as young women, Hagirim are not at all Human in thought or behavior. They are cunning, malevolent, dangerous, and powerful. They have significant magical powers of beguilement, illusion, druidry, thaumaturgy, and necromancy. Stories say that they usually eat Humans, Elvirim, and Dwarvirim they capture, but do not eat Orkrim, though they do kill them.
Basic Information
Anatomy
San Hagirim are shapeshifters. In native form, they look like small, brown-skinned, old and ugly women. When they choose to, they can also appear to Humans and other sentient species as very beautiful and voluptuous young women. They have thick hair that is typically brown. Their skin color varies, but is usually a shade of brown. Their skin is covered with wrinkles and bumps and is bark-like, thick and tough.
Genetics and Reproduction
San Hagirim are semi-immortal beings, so they do not reproduce or grow in the physical realm. They can be killed, though it is very difficult to do so. A San Hagirim that is killed is not permanently dead, but is banished to The Void to be reanimated at some other place and time.
Ecology and Habitats
San Hagirim are found in high mountain and hill caves and deep valleys, generally far from Human or Elvirim habitations. The presence of a San Hagirim in a cave or valley distorts it, deforming and warping the plant and animal life, permeating it with energy from The Void. The dead may spontaneously rise, and specters, walking skeletons, ghosts, and zombies haunt the area. Other species sympathetic to Void energy are drawn to the area, so the haunts of San Hagirim are crawling with poisonous plant and animal life, snakes, toads, stinging and biting insects, nettles, Wax Rose bushes, and so on. Koboldrim are often found nearby.
Dietary Needs and Habits
San Hagirim are omnivores, but are particularly fond of the flesh of Humans, Dwarvirim, and other sentient species. They do not eat Orkrim, though Hagirim kill any Orkrim they capture.
Behaviour
San Hagirim dwell in and are in some sense part of mountains, hills, and deep valleys where they are found. They are volatile, dangerous, and murderous, driven by malice and hatred. They use their powers of shapeshifting, beguilement, and illusion to capture, kill, and eat Humans, Elvirim, and other humanoid species. They will kill Orkrim, but not eat them, as Orkrim flesh is abhorrent to them.
Additional Information
Social Structure
San Hagirim are mostly solitary, but some live with or near one or more other Hagirim in a group known as a coven. They refer to the other Hagirim in the coven as sisters. The coven may include Mirra Hagirim and Sei Hagirim, but rarely.
Facial characteristics
San Hagirim look like brown-skinned, ugly old Human or Elvirim women. Their skin is rough, wrinkled, and bark-like, with frequent warts, bumps, and blemishes. Their hair is stringy and unkempt, brown or blond. However, when they want, they can appearing as beautiful young Human women, with beautiful, symmetric face, large eyes and fine features.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
San Hagirim are found in mountain lairs throughout Derkomai.
Average Intelligence
Whether or not San Hagirim have intelligence, as it is typically understood, is debatable. They do not share the goals or desires of Humans. They do not create nor reproduce. They are deeply hostile and malevolent toward Humans, Elvirim, Dwarvirim, and Orkrim. They regard Humans, Elvirim, and Dwarvirim as prey and have contempt and hatred toward Orkrim. Although their intelligence, as it is usually understood, may be debatable, there is no doubt about their cunning, deviousness and magical abilities. They are especially hated by Dwarvirim and feared by Orkrim, as they are more often in contact with them.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
San Hagirim are able to sense when a being enters their domain. They can sense the thoughts and emotions of animal life living near them and direct the actions of animals. Through druidic magic, they can manipulate both plant and animal life around them.
As a higher order of Okkurim, San Hagirim are also able to beguile most Humans and many Elvirim. Few people are able to resist the charms of a San Hagirim; though it is said that some Elvirim can, and some Dwarvirim are said to be able to see through their beguilements. Those beguiled by a San Hagirim are completely under the San Hagirim's power and will do whatever it/she tells them to do. However, if the San Hagirim directs actions completely out of character, the beguilement may be broken.
