Gotou
the nation of Gotou is a strange beast. Powerful. Imperial.
Parasitic.
Gotou is actually two nations. The one that gives it's name and the one that the first inhabits. At one point, 730 years ago, they would have been known as Gotou and Shao Kang. Sister nations, the two cooperated in many things. Sharing research, technology, military resources, and political assets. Even more subconscious things like cultural earmarks and traditions.
The two nations even intermarried thoroughly. A fact that would spell doom for Shao Kang's independence. The two nations had been so close that they didn't even balk when the royal family was joined to a noble from Gotou. Supposedly a handsome young god, who charmed the princess of Shao Kang and seemed genuinely invested in the betterment of the nation.
Until something sundered their romance.
Whatever it was, it was like a switch had been flipped. The princess was driven away, her family killed, captured, or forced to bend the knee. Gotan soldiers and gods were brought in and before anyone knew what was going on battalions had locked everything down, allowing the Prince who was now an Emperor to deal with the country at his leisure. And deal with it he did.
He still rules, being a god as he is, though he immediately became reclusive after his initial coup. Very few have seen him personally, and almost no mortals that are still alive have. There is a several year long waiting list to see him if you aren't already given special privilege which less than a dozen people, gods and mortals alike, hold.
Despite his reclusive nature, he still seems to take his rage out on the populace. Criminal punishments are are harsh in the Shao Kang territory, with maiming and execution a regular punishment for even the smallest of crimes. Taxes are cranked to the maximum and nascent gods that are discovered by the godhound are gathered up (by gunpoint if need be) and sent to Gotou for training and assimilation.
Gotou, on the other hand, is practically ignored. Left to rot by it's supposed ruler. The only thing keeping the inhabitants of the island from starving or tearing each other apart are the gods and bureaucrats that care enough, or have a vested interest, to keep the island running. And that list of allies is growing thin.
The gods of both component nations stray towards the martial side, with a few of the old guard of the cerebral gods still within the pantheon.
