Personal history
Richard Cross was the son of wealthy landowners south of Cape St. Joan. After inheriting the lands when his father died in an accident, it was under Richard's leadership that oil was discovered on the Cross lands while drilling for water for new wells. Richard subsequently founded Cross Oil to exploit the resulting fields and became a wealthy businessman.
In his will, he established the tradition of passing on leadership of the company amongst male heirs.
Cross died in 1948 as a result of complications from his almost lifelong overweight.
