Churganlak

Churganlak (Urkesh: Churgani zarlaka, lit. 'storm's end') was an Urkesh city in the northwest of the Zhiveshi Marshlands. It was one of the first Urkesh settlements to be established in the Urkesh Highlands, founded by the Rullkhan Clan as their seat of power ruling over the Zhiveshi Marshlands.   The city was abandoned after the Sundering, when the waters of the Ruuldalai Sea receded, causing the salt flats of western Zandrazil to dry up. Following this, a series of terrible thunderstorms battered Churganlak, destroying structures around the city and killing several hundred of the inhabitants. The Rullkhan abandoned the city and headed east over the Udul Mountains, leaving their ruined city behind to be haunted by the ghosts of the dead and reclaimed by the elements.

History

The Sundering

Churganlak lay just outside the blast radius of the Sundering and the Rullkhan bore witness to the arcane explosion that caused the jagged mountains of Folly's Wake to suddenly erupt out of the ground, casting shadows over their city. The Rullkhan were unsure what to make of the geologic event and their khan decided to travel to Bagarkhal to consult the Ariun-Zovlol to determine the nature of the event. In Bagarkhal, the Urkesh khans held counsel with the Ariun-Zovlol, who sensed the arcane nature of the Sundering. The orcs incorrectly surmised the dwarves, whom they knew as practitioners of arcane magic and who ruled over the lands at the center of the Sundering, as the source of this sudden explosion. The khans voted unanimously to declare war on the Udulan dwarves and departed Bagarkhal to rally their warbands to battle.   On the return trip from Bagarkhal, the khan of the Rullkhan noted the waterways of the Zhiveshi Marshlands had shrunk in the two months since he'd left. Returning to Churganlak, the khan discovered the streets filled with refugees from the surrounding marshlands whose farms and fisheries had failed due to the change in climate. Unrest was growing in the city, with supplies of grain and fish being stretched thin by the influx of refugees on top of the failing farms and fisheries.
