Lord of the Hinterlands
Lord (or Lady) of the Hinterlands is the title given to each of the heads of the seven baronies of Rhovanion.
Prior to the War of Endless Midnight, the Lord of the Hinterlands was the title given to the patriarch of the dwarven Clan Redaxe, which had ruled the Rhovanion Hinterlands since they conquered the territory during the Dracomachy. However, following the establishment of the Rhovanion Pact and the subsequent abdication and execution of Arendt Redaxe, the Hinterlands were divided into seven baronies gifted to noble families who swore an oath of loyalty to House Ayn'lor during the War of Succession.
Appointment
The title of Lord or Lady of the Hinterlands was originally bestowed on the lords of the seven houses that allied with Elanor Ayn'lor during the War of Succession. While some baronies maintain a hereditary monarchy, others hold elections to determine successors to the previous Lord or Lady of their territory.
