Ah'Shal

Ah'Shal represents an important and inevitable point in all mortal's lives: Death. The Goddess of the Dead approaches this task with an emotionless neutrality, taking the good and the wicked when their due time comes. Despite the necessity of her role, her association with darkness and death often result in her being labelled an "evil" goddess by some fraction of the Dremoran population. The Goddess of Death is often depicted as darkness made manifest, a shadow creature roughly bound to the shape of a woman, or as a pale humanoid with green eyes, often a tiefling with horns that curl backwards. Worshippers of Ah'Shal are often morticians dispatched from the city of Ah'Shal to oversee the funeral rites of the dead from towns to cities across the continent.

Death's Presence in Varoona...

While investigating the supposedly haunted Von'Della Estate outside of Varoona Proper, Newt, Callon, Oksha, and the rest of the Deep End discovered the recreation of a horrible scene of death and a showdown between a blue tiefling man and a small army of ghoulish figures led by a shadowy figure atop a large shadowy hound. When the creature was defeated, it released a horrifying - and familiar - wail as the twisted recreation came to a close and the tiefling man vanished. Oksha seemed incredibly confused after the whole affair. What was Ah'Shal's avatar doing in Varoona? What role did she have in the death of the Von'Della family? Why did this avatar attack the tiefling man?

The Office of the Goddess of Death

Passing through the large skull-adorned doors, you step into a circular chamber supported by dark stone pillars. The entire room is illuminated by the same green light that beckons souls, but there is no easily discernible source. While the stonewalls of the room are mostly bare, there are three large, prominent, and decorated doors.
  1. A large door is locked and sealed, composed entirely of a mixture of black stone and dark block wood with gaunt figures arranged around it. Skulls, skeletons, corpses, and other creatures are arranged in a mockery of life.
  2. A green door has been left open, resting gracefully against the stonewalls that surround it. A set of steps leads up to it... beyond, through the doorway, a swirling mass of teal, blue, and gray that fades to black in the distance.
  3. Directly across, a large stone archway encloses a dark obsidian door that sits partially ajar. The door itself is cracked, with a flickering of color radiating off of it: fiery red, icy frost, crackling yellow, greenish fog, brilliant light, and dark black. From where the door sits ajar... licks of flame dance.
In the center of the room is a simple, modest stone desk. Notebooks, scrolls, and tomes sit neatly arranged on the desk. Piles of additional books and clusters of scrolls rest nearby on the ground. It is here that Ah'Shal sits and performs her duty as both Gatekeeper and Guider of Souls.

Tenets of Faith

The Cycle – Death is not the end, but merely the turning point in the never-ending cycle of life, death, and new life. Each death should be respected and honored as each death provides the fuel and the spark for new life to emerge. As the goddess of death and decay, Ah'Shal expects her followers to honor the cycle, interfering with it only when it has been wrongfully disrupted.
Guider of Souls – While the body may fade from the world for eternity, the soul or the spirit lives on. As the goddess of these souls, Ah'Shal strives to guide all of them to their rightful home in the afterlife. It displeases her for ghosts and other spirits to linger in the mortal realm. All souls and spirits should be guided swiftly and quickly to the afterlife, where Ah'Shal may send them to their final resting place.
