Session 84
General Summary
Where Bird Pictionary Leads
With Thanatos perched on his shoulder, Newt stands perplexed. What are you doing here? Where's Volo? Thanatos opens his beak to go megaphone mode... and nothing comes out. Rani looks at Thanatos. He does seem like a bird... but he's too intelligent of a bird. Speak with Animals won't work, but perhaps a devised system will work: peck for yes and claw for no.
A series of questions then ensued with Thanatos frantically responded with a peck, claw, or confused or enthusiastic mixture of both. Is Volo with Oksha? No. Is Volo okay – does he need our help? Yes and No. Does Volo have all of his stuff? Claw. No. That's BAD. Rani eventually pulls out her map. Where is Oksha? While the map attempts to pinpoint her location, Thanatos is quick to immediately peck the region of Ah'Shal. Okay, smart bird, then where is Volo? Thanatos begins to make a series of pecks centered around the region of Eredet. Moira attempts to scry on Oksha, but finds that she's blocked. Should she even bother scrying on Volo? Probably not.
In an attempt to perhaps – illuminate the situation – Thanatos stole a piece of chalk from Calibird and began a very crude drawing. Thanatos was quick to realize the fruitless nature of his attempt. Are those arms? Horns? No, they're ears (as Thanatos bit Ghilani's ear). Eventually, Thanatos draws a skull and pecks it. Ah, we need to go to Ah'Shal. With Thanatos back on Newt's shoulder, the Deep End sets out, leaving Calibird temporarily behind to help with Six's ritual. Ghilani receives a message from Diviner Two. There is someone who wants to speak to you, when you have the time. Maybe it's Parvathian or Azhi. Or it's about the Black Dragon Clan. Let's be optimistic!
Arriving at the House of Death, Newt flags down an Acolyte. Have you seen Oksha? Yes, actually. She stepped out to take a walk with Markus – looking for bodies in the ash piles and all that. Yes, she was in her robes and armor and Markus, as always, was armored. That's typical... is there a reason we should be concerned? Newt mentions that he and Oksha speak every day and he just hasn't heard from her. Right... the Acolyte walks away. Newt then tries to send to Markus... and finds that it doesn't work. Is Markus dead? Or is he wherever Oksha or Volo are?
A bit perplexed, the group asks Thanatos again. Do we need to just be here on the land? No. The Goddess then? Yes! Down the chute the Deep End goes once more, into the garbage and sewage filled cavern and down the "river" there. As they walk the silence is suddenly broken by muffled conversation. Was there anyone down here last time? Should there be anyone down here? Sneaking forward, two creatures seem to be engrossed in their work of laboring to scrub off the ancient stains. They each possess cloven hooves, a large set of wings, a face both reminiscent of a lizard and goat... and large scales with a light blue color in the cracks.
Ghilani bravely offers to be the diversion and just go say hi while everyone stealths (with Ms. Clang-Clang over here, full stealth just isn't an option). Newt says absolutely not, this seems like a thing he has to deal with. We shouldn't do that. Newt then proposes the exact same plan as Ghilani, but walks forward himself. Hey, what are you doing? What's going on here? The two fiendish creatures immediately startle before dropping into deep bows. Ah, Prince. Yes. We are working on orders from the Madame. She is just up ahead.
Meanwhile, Rani puts a new spell to use... and manages to trace tiny flecks of blood, Oksha's blood. After a bit of discussion and mind link updates, Newt demands the two take him to this Madame. The two immediately agree, guiding them down the embellished hallway towards the large set of black doors.

And This Family Keeps Getting Bigger...
Entering the now lit Temple hall, the fiends appear to be... cleaning? And performing some restoration work as well? Artifacts have been organized, the floor mural is being meticulously cleaned, and fragments of collapsed pillars are being reconstructed. Overseeing the restoration of a statue is a human woman... if you look at her face only. The rest of her is warped with massive wings folded low on her back and protruding bone that forms an elaborate "collar" around her shoulders. Upon being disturbed, she seemed quite excited to see Newt and his... staff? Servants? Sure, friends.
When asked what they are doing, Hithvessa explained that – obviously – they are cleaning! How atrocious this is to let the Temple fall into such disrepair! What is you're world doing?? You came sooner than expected so we are not very far along. Newt then asks: what exactly is our relation? Oh, I'm Atu's first Consort. I'm your stepmother! Newt now has 4 mothers, all with varying degrees of investment in him. Did a Yuan-Ti come through here? OH! Oksha! So much fire in that one, you chose so well! It's been so long since I did a... wedding? You call it that, yes? When pressed about what happened and how long they had been "out and about", Hithvessa started to answer, but ultimately default to "you better talk to your father". After calling Boltivon to her side, she began to lead the Deep End into Ah'Shal's domain.
The River seems much the same as before. Ah'Shal's "waiting room" is now littered with fiends, though they seem to be keeping things a bit more organized and efficient. Newt asked if Thyron was around and the tiefling appeared after Hithvessa yelled for him. Thyron seems indifferent to the change; They're actually helping so it's not quite all bad. He mentioned that three of what he wagers were Newt's siblings approached the door: a tabaxi, a Yuan-Ti with one arm, and a four-eyed individual with wings. He heard something happen in Ah'Shal's office and then these fiends cam pouring out!
After leaving Thyron, Ah'Shal's office looks... very much the same, but there is no blurry barrier obscuring what lies beyond now. Instead, light pulses in oscillating colors from the shattered doorway: red, blue, green, yellow, white, and black. The door to the Undead and Undying is also open with a cluster of fiendish characters standing in front of it. Ah'Shal is seated at her desk and Thanatos immediately flies to her. A familiar figure turns and, in the oscillating light, it is clear that his shadow does not match the form he wears.

Newt, what a pleasant surprise! Did you come to welcome me? Impossible! Who COULD have told you? No matter!
Rani and Moira peal off to speak to the hunched figure leaning against the wall nearby, but Rani redirects Moira to Oksha with Declan. Ghilani skirts around Atu to place his chin against Ah'Shal's desk – the flower is still there, though wilting. She gives him an unimpressed look. Confronting Atu: What happened? Well, you do know you aren't my only child right? Last time, you didn't seem to receptive to my offer. As my first born, you have the first right... but you don't have the only right. So, given that I'm on a bit of a potential time crunch, with the other warlords and all breathing down my neck... I extended the offer to by second born: Lollith.
You know, she came into my view almost right after you left last time? Anyway, Lollith, Chain, and Zetla all came and Ah'Shal and I had a positively lovely tango (Ah'Shal comments that she attacked him with a sickle), she called on her Executioners... and here we are. Of course, I have a deal with Lollith and I, unfortunately, can't betray her. BUT, do you know she wanted Oksha? I know how much seh means to you – quite the spitfire that one – and so I sent Lánvi to go fetch her. But your sister very much wanted her dead. I offered an alternative. So don't you worry, she's safe (right over there)! I did try and save Volo... but he seemed adamant on goading her. Wouldn't shut up that one. Unfortunate, I can't say much about the nature of my deal with your sister... but, you know, I can't quite recall if Oksha was unconscious or not when Lánvi brought her in. Hm.
Ghilani, meanwhile, asks how Ah'Shal is doing. The Goddess mentioned that she no longer has her keys or her scepter, but she is doing her job: moving souls. And how do you feel about – gesture to Atu – that? Ah'Shal, with no expression, responds that there are pros and cons to every situation. As she speaks with Ghilani, it is very apparent that the Goddess' gaze shifts to the door to the House of the Undead, now completely open. Newt joins the conversation with Ah'Shal. Can Thanatos talk? Of course he can communicate telepathically with his Executioner. You, Newt, are not his Executioner. Ah'Shal's eyes then flash. She conveys that Thanatos followed Volo as far as he could before he was sent back to fetch The Deep End. Volo intended for them to receive this message. Thanatos recalled seeing a tower, large and overlooking the water – a bay perhaps. It is not a tower of Ah'Shal's region. Given Thanatos' previous pecking on the map... it seems Thanatos is referring to the Tower Citadel in Eredet.
Newt goes back to his dad who – although shorter than him – wraps an arm around his shoulders. Now, did you know you were always my favorite? Still are! I had the absolute privilege of watching a very, very, VERY blurry image of you growing up... sort of. Regardless, you have my blood (and I love me), but you, Newt, you have the right kind of reverence for death (I'm working on that with Zetla). I'm not particularly fond of my deal with Lollith. I don't quite like this man she calls "Father" as if he's on equal ground with ME. But he claims to have information on how to close the door. If you find that information, help the Lady of Death close the door – with me on this side, of course – then my deal with Lollith will be null and void! Newt isn't completely convinced (rightfully so, he got the lying gene from someone, obviously). Do you want Lollith alive? Preferably as unharmed as possible. Newt somewhat agrees to this "plan", if it can be called that. And then leaves to go talk to his girlfriend.
Rani goes to talk to the weakened form of Angelos. If you find yourself in Lark'Hal, would you tell my mother that I'm fine... or perhaps that I died honorably? Rani offers a deal as opposed to a favor. What do you know? Angelos mentioned that Volo had approached him about going to Lark'Hal. Given the only suspicious activity he's noted is the white masks, he wagered it was connected. He was only halfway across the continent when he was summoned here. Volo seemed eager to go – goading her. He was in-and-out and missed much of the conversation. Rani promises to land a few blows on Lollith on Angelos' behalf. He seems amused. Xavier was too young and certainly didn't deserve to die the way Angelos imagines he did. I don't need that vengeance, but Xavier does.
Ghilani, meanwhile, has made himself perfectly comfortable on Ah'Shal's desk as he names of all the positives to Ah'Shal of naming Newt an Executioner – she needs more anyway, right? Atu, after Newt leaves, seems to chime in, agreeing and supporting Ghilani's statements.
Declan and Moira approach the arrangement of curtains, fabric, and pillows in the corner. Zetla appears and, upon seeing who it was, gave a brief nod of acknowledgement before settling back. Oksha took her place quickly. She seems fine, quipping that it's good to "see" you. Declan is confused. You can see? No, I'm still BLIND. Declan then mind linked with Oksha. What happened? Oksha explains that she and Markus had gone out as they always did, but were ambushed. Markus had said something about a creepy fucker in a bird mask before he told her to run. She knows who it was in the mask. She'd recognize the two spirits clinging to him anywhere. She knows he died because she heard it and sensed it. She would have died too if it hadn't been for Lánvi... and for Atu for giving the order, she supposes. She was brought here and she speculates that they "allowed" her to send her message to Newt. Her sending stone has since been confiscated. Oksha then asked if they had happened to look around. Do you know what happened to Markus' body? Declan responded that they hadn't found the body, though Ah'Shal later confirms that Markus' spirit had passed here, but her body is not in her realm. Rani asked if the Goddess would allow Oksha to speak with him. The Goddess did agree, but perhaps after a bit of time.
Declan asked if Oksha would like a hug or if she would rather punch something. You can punch me if you need to? Oksha does just that, though its clear that her forte is not in hand-to-hand combat. She admits, in frustration, that she'd very much like to shank someone. Newt makes his way over and immediately hugs Oksha. Although she's only known Newt's dad for a short time, he wasn't lying. Your father saved me and did what he could to save Volo...

Your father saved me and did what he could to save Volo...
He claimed she was too much of a coward to take him on. Said that at least you had the balls to steal his axe and wait. Yet she was afraid of him... bloodied and beaten.Moira perks up. He... He called someone a COWARD???
Oksha expressed her desire to wreck havoc and Newt agreed that this will be righted. Markus' death should not have happened and won't go unpunished. Newt extended and offer to Oksha. We can do this together. Oksha... paused. I can't. I'm not allowed to leave and, even if I could, I fear I'd only be a liability. Regardless, Oksha assured Newt that she's being well taken care of here, surprisingly. HIthvessa gave her new clothes and... seems to refer to her as "princess", for some reason. Ah, Newt explained that it seems Hithvessa thinks they're married... or at least are getting married. Oksha pauses. OH.
Releasing Oksha from another hug, Newt turned to Zetla. Hey. Did you know about Lollith? Zetla sighs, no. It was Ikaris who brought me here and we met Lollith here. Did you know you were going to do this when we spoke? Yes. Did you think I harbored no vengeance for what was done to me? What that Goddess put my mother through? Newt gives Zetla a hard stare. Well, see you around I guess. Oh, can I have that sending stone back?
Rani arrives back at Ah'Shal's desk right as Ghilani is in the middle of his "Newt would be an excellent Executioner" pitch. Did the people of Judas ever arrive here? Soul wise? Ah'Shal pauses and thinks for a moment. No, they did not. As a matter of fact, I can no longer sense the Court of Judas; I do not have access to it. Rani then turns to Atu. Hey, does your army need like clean air to breathe? Well, we're doing just fine here in the smog, why do you ask? Do you need people for a suicide mission? I can send volunteers. Oh. No. Not at all. There's just this thing called the Wasteland. Maybe your people could set up there? Might be perfect if you don't mind living with some tortured souls. Atu seems weirdly perturbed by that. If tortured souls is anything like what I lived through in my world... then I would be interested in remedying that.
Rani continued, asking about whether or not Lollith had said anything about where she was or was going to be? Anything about who she worked for? Atu doesn't have much information to give, though he doesn't like that Lollith is calling someone else "father" and values that person more. As far as he can tell, whoever this "Father" is, they have a vested interest in retaining the... status quo.
As Newt and Rani step out to find Chain, Ah'Shal turns to Ghilani: Does he know where his soul will go? Atu perks up. What now? His soul will go where now? Ghilani explains that there is a deal in place and Atu twitches a bit. What do you think you're going to do with my son's soul? Break your deal now. Ghilani, taken aback, assures Atu that he'll keep Newt safe! YOU? But hey, Newt's immortal! What happens if you die? Oh, Newt dies. WHAT? Break the deal, now. Ghilani isn't sure he can. Atu then surges forward, taking on a more monstrous form as he lifts Ghilani in the air in a chokehold.
Moira and Declan rushed over. Declan, once again, yelling to "put the child down". Hithvessa mimics them, moving to try and calm Atu down. Atu is slightly calmed, returning to his more humanoid form after a few more exchanges of words. And then Rani and Newt return, weapons drawn. It's fine! My sincerest apologies. But know that if something happens to my son's soul or you can't break this fucking deal... then I will throw you through the door and watch you suffer. Ghilani says you can't kill me or you'll kill your favorite son! Exactly. Eternal torment and my son retains immortality.
Rani chastises Atu for the outburst. You'd rip Ghilani limb from limb? What about your own daughter? If SHE harmed your favorite son, would you carry out such threats on her? Atu paused and then grinned: I suppose I would. Atu seemed a bit stressed given that he would prefer what remains ofhis children stay. It has already proven difficult to recover the others. The... how should you say... the Lord of the Undead weaseled his way out and is proving difficult. Moira pipes up: oh, your son? Ah'Shal glares. Who TOLD you? Moira's pitch goes up: "No one... I can't remember...". Why is the door open, anyway? Ah'Shal mentions that she called for his aid. Who has the keys by the way? Oh, I do. Atu smiles. Did you think I would let anyone else have them?
With the threat of throwing Ghilani through, Rani and Moira asked after Atu's world. Would you like to take a look? Moira declines. Atu explaned that this world didn't have any "termination rules". When prompted, Atu listed some obscure, alien-sounding names, but confessed that he is no longer sure if they are all names for his world or if one of them is. Moira's parasite is... vaguely familiar with them, but can't provide any helpful information. Atu offers a bit of information for free: my world was once like yours. I was not always like this. Moira asks what happened to their Creator god? Atu smiled.
Atu chastised Newt for making a deal. You won't make a deal with me, but you'll make a deal with that one? Everyone responds shocked. What can Ghilani do? Do you think he could lie or deceive? Look at his face! Rani ducks out feeling the awkward conversation rising. Atu pressed: what about the being he serves? Glaring, something settles over Ghilani and he dashes out of the room with Moira following after. Well, to be fair, our first interactions were you deceiving me. Atu responds: And did that no teach you anything?? Before leaving, Newt slaps Zetla's sending stone into Atu's hand. We can stay in touch that way. Atu seemed very pleased with this milestone in their relationship! With one final hug to Oksha, Newt steps out.
Rani finds Chain seated near the little portion of the river that drifts into the waiting room. Rani asks if he told Lollith anything about them or if Chain knew anything. No, she creeped me out. I didn't say anything about ya'll. Look, I only came here for Zetla. She was really determined, you know? I couldn't let her do this alone. Plus, if there was a chance I could make my mom's life just a bit better... After everything she's been through. Rani understands how he feels; she would do the same for... (Tatya).
Newt makes his way over and introduces himself to Chain. Nice to meet you. Chain's struggling with the image of a Goddess unconscious on the floor. Yeah, they're just like us... just absurdly powerful, aye? Chain laughs and remarks that he's just a con man. If you need anyone to pull cons, he might be able to help. Newt mentions that, hey, they're kind of similar. You a good liar? Nah, I'm not a liar. Nice, bro. Chain seemed open to the idea of a bigger family... though maybe after some time has passed.
And with that, Hithvessa leads them out. As they leave, Ghilani remarks: "Do you know where he keeps his army?? In his sleevies."
Releasing Oksha from another hug, Newt turned to Zetla. Hey. Did you know about Lollith? Zetla sighs, no. It was Ikaris who brought me here and we met Lollith here.
The Fear of Volo with 4 Arms
Newt mentioned that he plans to bring Lollith back first, but they are definitely going to kill her. She crossed a line killing Markus. Moira pauses. Hold up. Lollith crossed the line with the tube. How DARE she stick Calibird in a TUBE. After climbing out of the hole and arriving in the lower levels of the House of Death once more, Rani kneels down:
Declan, can I hold your sword... the sharp one.
Rani prays first to Varoona. I know it's been a while and you may not recognize me since I'm not chastising you, but can you spare some chaotic energy to allow us to just divinely look anywhere we want? And get past any divination barriers currently in place? Although Rani feels the sensation of waves, she doesn't get a formal response. Releasing Declan's sword, Rani wraps her arms around herself. Hey Lark, I could really use any form of inspiration here. For a moment, she ascends into space with the familiar swarm of colors and looks across the whole continent. She watched her path since leaving the desert. You've taken every step thus fat, I feel you will continue to take the right ones.
Arriving in Eredet, the Deep End began walking through the city. The people are very much looking and whispering. Finding Dr. Valdove in her office, she admits the broadcast wasn't as bad as expected, but, according to her father, the Council is in a bit of a tense situation. She transcribed Phaedra's response and read it to the group. When questioned, Serene suggested they speak to her father. He would know more about the political atmosphere, but she can't imagine High Lord Maletshatsi being in a good place at the moment.
The Deep End then tells Dr. Valdove that they suspect the Doctor is in the Tower citadel. Serene nodded. It IS a secure location in a place with substantial resources. Serene hasn't seen any Executioners around and, as a matter of fact, hasn't seen Mary or Rayen for some time. As the group thinks about who else to potentially question on this matter, Rani mentions Olivantha. Everyone nods, except Moira... who? What do you mean "Who"? The Lady of the Night? The HEEL of Varoona? She had a HOLE in her abdomen? Doesn't ring a bell. Denarya's daughter? Oh! I know Denarya, didn't realize she had a daughter.
After a moment of confusion, Rani gasped. Your memories of Olivantha. She took them. When asked, Serene says its possible and after casting a quick spell on Moira can confirm that someone's tampering. However, she'd have to keep Moira around for a bit to determine whether her memories were suppressed, erased, or taken. They are each very different things. Serene then mentioned that she needs to go to Carmenthia to check on something. But yes, she used to know someone who would be able to handle this... When asked, Serene responded: she's dead.
Ghilani then sent to Diviner Two. Who wants to talk to me? Parvathian. Aye, ma boi! Then the group made their way to Tower Citadel and are able to find their way to High Lord Valdove's office. He is quite happy to have received warning, but the Council appeared torn. You represent us and thus, any statement you publicly make has to be considered an extension of us. Therefore, we have to take it seriously. The Council is uncertain which accusation of yours to focus on: the Royal Families or the Dragon Clans. Ghilani chimes in: they murdered me! Thtat we can prove! I'm sorry you were murdered, but that is not what the Council cares about. It is the broader accusations of a still living slave trade.
Ghilani told the High Lord that what he said on the broadcast was true, they just don't have proof. Valdove agrees. He trusts his daughter's arcane judgment after all. He then suggested to Ghilani that he issue a formal apology to the Royal Genasi families - grove if you have it in you. You may not like it, but it may force things to settle down until you acquire proof. And then maybe we can get into the palace! The High Lord then says he can get them an invitation if that is what they need (the apology would certainly make that easy now). You can do that? Who do you think I am? I am one of the wealthiest and most politically powerful people on this continent. Well, we don't want it to seem like we're just mooching off of you.
Given your power and wealth High Lord, can you get us permission to search the Tower Citadel? The Doctor is definitely here. Unfortunately, that's not immediately within Valdove's jurisdiction. What proof do you have? A bird told us! Valdove's perfectly composed face slipped just a bit before it returned to its fully composed natural state. A bird? Well, it was a special bird of Ah'Shal, so you know. Unfortunately, special bird or not, that's still not sufficient. Can you see what you can do with the Council at least? Maybe issue a statement? The High Lord says that it's feasible. Rani requests that the High Lord merely tell the Council that they are taking care of important business while awaiting word from High Lord Nozhawk regarding Elios. Of course, he agrees.
A meeting is arranged with High Lord Maletshatsi later in the evening and High Lord Briar is more than happy to meet now! Regarding the broadcast, Newt says he'll get back to High Lord Valdove. Rani still doesn't think it's a good idea, but Newt (playing Dad's advocate) thinks it still may be worth considering. Maybe he could challenge her to a duel?
In a complete shift from the stoic High Lord, High Lord Briar is relaxed. How was the Council? Briar was certainly entertained, though does express some mild concern on Emir's behalf. Emir is one of Briar's allies - or so they claim - and therefore, Lux is concerned. On a serious note, Briar, where do your loyalties lie? Oh? What a QUESTION! To the continent and to Primus. Which one? Both. I believe that Primus can bring about something better. Have you not seen the world... it's not what it could be.
What do you know about the Doctor? Lux has little to offer besides stating that their associate is looking into it. But what do you THINK about The Doctor? How do you feel? Lux seems taken aback. What little you think of me! Do you think I'd condone such a thing? We're just covering all of our bases. When the Tower of Judas was mentioned, Briar seemed to brush it off. That old thing is crumbled and collapse, wholly unsafe... but perhaps he could be under it. Ghilani then mentioned that the Doctor did work in the 4th Ward! Everyone shushes him, but Lux only winks: Don't worry, I know about that. Lux will see what they can find out, but security measures have learned practically all of their tricks. A simple invisibility isn't going to get you much...
An investigation awaits... don't want a 4-armed Volo running around, now do we?

Queen Phaedra's Public Statement
Clearly, there has been some confusion. There is no blood in the paint. This, most certainly, is a misunderstanding. Centuries ago, it was true that Sivat blood was used to reinforce the Muses' paint. The people spoke in valid concern for the great sand beasts and the royal families listened. That practice has long since been ended and the formula adjusted. To the best of my knowledge as Queen, the Muses' paint is produced through physical and magical means. Given that our accuser is of the arcane variety, perhaps he is unfamiliar with our magic and mistook our arcane weavings for the source from which he draws his own arcane powers. He is but a young elven boy from the Bay region. He does not know our desert, or our hearts.
