Session 83

General Summary

Rewind: What if One Day, You Don't Come Home?

Rani finds two familiar sand seals lounging in a bit of shade at S.A.S.S. Upon her approach, one of them – Rolling Dune – makes a bit of a show pretending to be wounded. Rani kneels in front of them and beseeches the Great Rolling Dune.

Rani apologized to Rolling Dune for hurting him. She acted on instinct, but knows that's no excuse and she never should have caused harm to an innocent such as he. She vows to prevent such harm from happening again. And to Iris, she apologizes for dishonoring her. When Rani has finished her apologies (and bowed), both sand seals move to boop her heart and then her forehead. When she then cries, they both place their heads on her shoulder for a moment before flopping back into the ideal lounging position on the sands. The apology seems to have been accepted.

Rani and Tatya find a somewhat secluded booth in the back of the Blue Sandstone Lounge. Tatya slaps a small stone-like object on the table, claiming that he "borrowed" it from Marcella. She's in a meeting, she won't miss it. Dr. Dunebrook uses it to remain "unnoticed" when she wants to go out and people watch sometimes. After that, there's a heavy pause that falls over them. Tatya seems a bit uncertain. Rani comments that it was a lot easier when they talked AFTER beating each other up a bit...
Rani starts by saying that she loves Tatya above all else. He's her brother and she's been recently berated by the Grandmother's now that she needs to have faith in her family more. She trusts Tatya and she knows that no matter what consequences she may have brought down upon them, he and the rest of the family will be able to weather that storm. Tatya smirks. I hope you have faith in me.
But speaking of trust, how familiar are you with funding at LIMA? Don't worry, Dr. Dunebrook has plenty of funding, but some things got a little weird after she secured that grant with Dr. Valdove. When Phaedra came to power, she began a very liberal spending agenda, which involved donating to academic pursuits... and roping in the other families to do the same. With what your "blood" friend said about the families... and how Dr. Dunebrook was pulled out of a seminar, mumbling something about funding. Tatya laughed – I'm intelligent – but I might be jumping the gun. Either way, just be aware. Rani inquired a bit more about Phaedra – where is she directing this money? Tatya named a few locations, but mentioned that Baba would probably know more. He keeps up with the gossip. He loves that kind of thing.
Tatya ultimately assured Rani that Dr. Dunebrook has plenty of funding, regardless... plenty to work on the Wasteland device. Tatya then faltered and went silent. Rani squeezes his hand, asking if he was okay. Tatya took a breath.
You know I remember the swords. I didn't think much of them until recently. Remembering how the Grandmothers would talk about how important they were... yet they never expected you to do anything with them. Ha, don't worry, I'm not jealous. I was always the smarter one, anyway. Rani agreed – of course, you ARE the smart one. But, she had your swords. And she wore your face, but... it wasn't happy. It was sad, broken, and pained. I realized that things have changed, Rani. You're known. And I'm not jealous of your fame, though perhaps I'm deserving of the same. Ha... I told myself when you left last time that it'll be just like Mama leaving. She'll be gone for a few months and when she returns, everything will be the same... but I realize this won't be. You will always be called to something greater... and I'm proud of you. Always will be. But I'm afraid you will be called... and you won't ever come back.
Rani squeezed Tatya's hand. You know I would do everything and fight to make it back to you? The only reason I wouldn't is if something else prevented me. Tatya laughed, though devoid of humor. That's what I'm afraid of. Rani then told Tatya the story – as she knows it – of the swords. There was an Oracle who crossed the continent to Judas. She foresaw the need to commission such blades... and she passed them to a woman named Soyolmaa. Tatya recognized the description Rani provided. Rani continued: I think she married a child of Judas and I think they had a son. I don't think their story ended well during the War, but the Oracle also saw me. I fear that there are countless souls trapped in Judas – in the Wasteland. What you saw may have been a ghost. Or may have been one of them.
Tatya chuckled. That's quite the story. Sounds like one Baba would read. If it's true, then Marcella's work is all the more important. You might be called to the continent, but I'll do what I can to help here. Now, should we maybe get a drink, beat each other up, and relax? Rani agrees.
Before departing Lark'Hal, Baba confirmed that Phaedra and her cousin were up for the monarch position. Phaedra's cousin, Katreus, was older, more experienced, and expected to win, but it was Phaedra who ended up as Queen. Since then, Katreus has been nothing but Phaedra's worst critic. Baba seems to support Phaedra. While her spending policy may be liberal – to the dismay of Katreus and some others – most of her efforts are investing in academics, donating to the arts and to the temple, and supporting restoration project in the Heart of the Desert, on the coast, and throughout various small trading posts.
Mama can confirm the raiders' story. A handful of years ago, a particularly nasty sandstorm horribly damaged some trading posts and a few nomadic tribes were almost or entirely wiped out. They flocked to the city outskirts and the West End for a bit, but they have since dispersed. Marcella assures Rani that her funding is secured. There are just technical issues being sorted out due to receiving the generous joint grant with Dr. Valdove from Eredet.

Back in the Sanctum

Lux quickly leaves the Deep End, vanishing into Haven. Are we going to the Sanctum? Six isn't one to waste any time. Newt mentions going to try and speak to his sibling. Zetla, was it? Declan and Six head into the Mist. Declan is greeted almost immediately by Rosamel, who brings him to the base of the Volcano. Six arrives shortly thereafter. Wasn't too much of an issue. Upon entering the Sanctum... it looks a little bit different than the last time. It smells like ocean breeze? And is that the sound of waves breaking?
The Jungle parts and up ahead, a portion of it has been cleared to feature a large lake. Despite the lake's presence, the "magma-fall" can still be seen at the far end of the volcano. Spectral figures now lounge at the edges of beaches, others float on various cushioned rafts, and others are partying atop marble structures that really shouldn't be able to float. In the middle of it all is an impressive ship made of jungle wood, adorned in gold filigree and vines with bushels of flowers. A statue of Varoona and Therarask with arms linked supports the bow.
Therarask appears lounging on the edge of the ship, white shirt open to reveal their impressive abs. The loose striped pants have been replaced with tight ones accompanied by thigh high black boots with a menagerie of belts and other hanging trinkets. "Welcome back Capt- Oh, that's your mom!" Therarask rolls into the ship before reappearing a moment later. Declan is amazed – How did you do all of this? Therarask groans. Dearest, I am a God of Illusion. Declan asks to come aboard and instantly appears near Therarask. What's her name? After some workshopping... the Deep Shaft? Seems fitting. Now shall we christen this vessel??? Wait, you need to talk to my mom, where is she? Six appears on the boat – I was talking to this armored person. Declan went below deck to give Six and Therarask a moment to talk.
Meanwhile, Rani asks the bartender at Dragon's Den if Zetla is working. Yeah, she'll be around. Take a seat. Newt orders a beer. Do you want a beer or some liquid courage? Rani says don't do the Liquid Courage. Do you WANT to risk forgetting a whole hour??? Newt settles for the beer. Zetla eventually makes her way over. It's nice to meet you. Newt asks if she has a moment to chat, perhaps in private? About what? About family matters. Newt starts to talk, but aware of the eyes and ears, decides to move elsewhere. Zetla leads them to a booth tucked in the back of the establishment.
Newt asks Zetla what happened. After a moment, she responds that she was attacked. Newt expresses sorrow at what happened to her. When asked, Zetla explained that her mother works here and that she's lived here her entire life. She feels quite safe here. Newt agrees, if the eyes and ears on them was anything to go by. Do you know anything about our father? Zetla explains that her mother said his name was Zureth and doesn't seem to be fond of him. None of the women seem fond of him so that's not a surprise. Newt then begins to explain that he's recently learned that he has family and is trying to find them. Their father is trapped in another dimension by Ah'Shal and seems to want to gather all of us... though he knows not why or for what. It might be nefarious. Zetla chimes in: If you suspect he wants us to do something... isn't it better to not have us together? Newt just wants to touch base and says that Zetla deserves to know why she might have been attacked. So long as she is safe here, she should stay here.
Ghilani then extended his hand, introducing himself. How nice to meet a blood-hunter-in-law! You'll probably never meet Declan, he's busy keeping the volcano from exploding. Zetla is confused.
Ghilani, Moira, and Rani all make their way through the Golden Mist with ease. Newt, however, spends some time ping-ponging around. Ghilani and Moira hunker down at the edge of the Sanctum to try and help Newt. Left, no not your left, the OTHER LEFT!
Rani finds Artemilla meditating. Artemilla is not sure how much progress is being made, but believes that there is at least a little. They have toxic traits, but they are not irredeemable. It will take more than just therapy from Artemilla, however. Artemilla finds the Sanctum and Therarask to be an interesting challenge. They have thought on their own nature. Perhaps antagonists are more of a balance than their name may suggest. They don't have much information on the other antagonists such as Tolvaj.
Therarask finds Declan after talking to Six. Therarask claims that all they talked about was Declan growing up. I love you just as you are – dad bod or damn bod. Declan doesn't necessarily believe that Therarask is telling them everything, but time to christen the boat! Also, hey, I think I solved the problem. I might be immortal if all goes to plan. Aren' you proud of my selfish decision made for you?! Therarask would like to hope.
After 19 hours of wandering the mist and enjoying the visions of what could be... Newt is finally found by Rosamel and brought to the Sanctum, exhausted. Therarask shows Declan a sped up version of Newt's adventures. Declan mentioned that there is someone he needs to speak to. Would you like me to allow you to speak with her? I don't NEED your permission. No, that's not– Dearest, she's not a member of my Upper Court. She can't take full humanoid form for long periods here. I can grant her some time, if you are ready to speak to her. Ohhhhh.
Declan finds Sylvia sitting on a cliffside. She leans in when Declan pulls her close. She assures Declan that she lived quite the happy life, even if short, and she hopes that Declan will find happiness. Tell Six not to miss her too much. Declan told her how Therarask delayed her arrival, but the extra wrinkles... they are worth it to make sure she got here. Sylvia smiles. Even gods make mistakes, don't they? Sylvia expresses her desire for Declan to not let vengeance direct him. She doesn't expect that from him. Declan expresses how much Sylvia meant to him and how destroyed he was when she was lost. But you are happy now, yes? As Sylvia begins to fade, Declan tells her he loves her. And I love you. Go, be happy for the both of us.
Meanwhile, Rani pulls Six for a conversation. So have you ever spoken to Tolvaj? Yes, a long time ago. It isn't a bad conversation partner. Deals are not everything it lives for. Rani asks about how Six is. No one really ever asked you how you felt about the hunter thing. I only ever wanted Declan as a son. I have no need for a Sworn in the many years. Six is not unfamiliar with death by blade... she had felt that Volo was smart enough to realize that this body wasn't her and that he would strike her actual form down: her tree. She would rather take that death than face slowly withering away. Regardless, she has resigned herself to that fate. Rani then asked... would you choose Primus or Declan? I would choose Death. Six assures Rani that she would do what she feels is right. Rani may not know how to feel about all the blood witches, but she knows how she feels about Six.
Six: "Living an immortal life either makes you wise... or pulls you into a downfall of madness."   Rani: "We've seen both happen in the blood witches... and the gods."   Six: "Interesting, isn't it?"
Reconvening, Therarask grants Newt a boon and high fives Ghilani. They will endeavor to visit Primus. But, as much as Therarask would like to have Declan here, the rest of them are not dead and it is not in good taste for them to remain here too long in the Sanctum. Newt is escorted out in his tired state. Newt touches base with Uncle Ikaris. He had already spoken to Zetla and Chain and so, was heading to Elios. The Deep End returns to Tel'Rhea.

Maybe Tolvaj ISN'T So Bad...

Six begins a ritual to help Newt's exhaustion. As Declan is helping, he presses Six on what she talked to Therarask about. Yes, they talked about how Declan grew up and it was all about him. She does mention that Six mentioned that Therarask should approach Primus with caution.
Rani and Moira head out to try and catch the Queen in her moment of "talking to the peasants". The Queen excuses herself from the guards. Yes, she received her marks from a nymph. She was raised primarily in the House of Life, but tours the city occasionally. Did you ever do errands or anything? No, I had people for that. Rani thanks her and heads out, talking to Moira as they scope out the Gardens of the Gods for soul plants. Hey... so do you think we could... TALK to Tolvaj? Just have a conversation?
As they begin to move back towards Home Tree, they spot some dryads and nymphs in the distance of the more heavily wooded area. They freeze and scatter, and a voice speaks from behind. Tolvaj appears initially as an ethereal dryad, but, when Rani asked for a conversation – no deals – Tolvaj appears as itself, hunkers down on its spider legs, and seems to await conversation. Tolvaj has been here for a long time. There was a time where Tel'Rhea acknowledged it, but it has been wiped from her memory. It very much wants to be known to her once more. Tolvaj explained that it could get them into the House of Life... all of them. And protect them from the wrath of Tel'Rhea. Rani asked about the Queen. Yes, Tolvaj gave the Queen her marks. Tolvaj has made deals with many... many were agreeable. There are those who do not wish to bring life into the world. Tolvaj permitted that. When asked about HOW Tolvaj would operate... Tolvaj mentioned that they would need a host. It looked at Moira: you would not be so unfamiliar to this. Tolvaj seemed incredibly agreeable. Considerable my deal... and I will be here.
Back in Home Tree, the group settles in. Hey, should Moira use her divine intervention to make the Lady of Dread fall in mud? No, we should make all her teacups break and then we can just... look for a large purchase of tea cups! Wow, that would be great.
Declan finds Therarask. Oh so soon! They had to put the boat away, but perhaps Therarask can inspire its creation somewhere... Declan mentioned that Tel'Rhea's High Priestess can't have kids. Therarask freezes with glee at gossip, but then ponders. A priestess of THE priestess?? The High Priestess... why? Therarask's eyes go wide. Tel'Rhea doesn't know... and Declan shoots up in bed.
Meanwhile, Moira finds herself in a familiar space... She sees no one, but feels a presence. Welcome back. I almost wanted to give this message to Ghilani... he certain knows how to draw attention. But no, I wanted you to deliver these words to the desert rat. Shall we put this so-called found family of yours to the test?
That, however, does not mean I do not wish... to harm her. You will tell her that I was prepared to stay my hand. To give you all the time to give me what I desire. But it was you. And it was you alone, dear Moira... who forced my hand.   Did she enjoy having the support of her parents? Did she enjoy the love she shares with her siblings? I hope she took it all in. As of today... and until I deem it otherwise, my dear Moira...   Hamida and Timur only ever had two children. Tatya was born first and Lakshmi later. All memories of the one named Rani... are now gone. The last sand has fallen through the hourglass.

The Lady of Dread continued. Would you like to call me a coward again, Moira? She takes a moment. Whether or not I do, it doesn't change what you are. The Lady of Dread chuckles. A more subtle, restrained tongue now. But be careful, for there is still Ezra and Zephus. Until we meet... face to face. Moira will count the days.

Tick, Tock, Are We Running Out of Time?

Declan explains that Therarask ACTUALLY had some helpful information. Tel'Rhea doesn't KNOW about her own High Priestess! Moira, meanwhile, tells Rani that perhaps they could step out and talk? Moira tells her that the Lady of Dread visited her... and that her family is all fine... but they don't remember you Rani. A moment passes, and then Rani screams. Frantically, she calls her father. Her baba responds, confused. Who is this? Is this Tatya? If its a prank, you sound quite like your sister! Close, but not quite! Rani collapses and cries. She remembers that home tree is Six so she picks another tree to punch.

The rest of the group is summoned by the scream. Rani explains that she plans on killing the Lady of Dread (Moira has been re-evaluating her stance on murder, but hell yes, she agrees). She's going to take everything from her and kill her. Rani takes a breath. She took half of my family. I have only Ezra, Zephus, and you all left. If she took my family's memories, who's to say that she can't take more? Who's to say she can't take our memories of each other? Or of Oksha? Or Six?
Ghilani sends to Marcella, who is perplexed. Yes, I know who Rani is. Sure, I can reach out to the Bhediya. Your memory isn't completely gone, Rani. She can't erase all that. What if she takes memories from the Council? Moira wouldn't mind if Ironborn forgot. Newt stands firm that there is enough of a paper trail of their existence that she can't get rid of them. She can't erase us.
Rani, desperate, says they need to go speak with Tolvaj. She'll make the deal. Moira says no, you've lost enough. You shouldn't have to give up any more. Moira will. Everyone pauses... you already have a passenger though. Moira checks in with buddy and pal. It responds that we are similar and different in conflicting, unpleasant ways. Cool, so never mind. Ghilani sends to Tolvaj: Hey, can we get a soul plant? Sure, I'll take you to one.
Declan suggests speaking to Six first. Perhaps she knows something about the Lady of Dread? Coming back inside, the group finds Six throwing things around.
Declan: Why are you breaking things?   Six: Sometimes you break things... so you can rearrange the pieces, putting them back together in a more beautiful arrangement.   Declan: Some unexpectedly needed wisdom from you right now.
Six mentioned that Tolvaj may be amenable to a favor. She does not know the Lady of Dread, but if the name is anything, she would surmise she has associations with the Dread King. Rani asked if memories can be taken and restored? Yes, by many means. You would need to know how it was done in order to reverse it. Six could potentially do it, but not without more information. Speaking of... hey buddy, is there more of you out and about? It responded that it felt other pieces of itself when you fought the giant creatures, the snail caverns, and... the City of Lark'Hal oozes with it.
The Deep End sets out for Tolvaj. After calling out for the creature, it eventually finds them and is very willing to show them to a soul plant. It is very old. It called Declan a child in regard to age. Tolvaj said that it is in its nature to take what could be, but that does not mean it has to. It draws forth a teal light from within its rib cage before putting it back. Why do you take? It allows me to be more humanoid.
Tolvaj leads them, as promised, to the soul plant. You will wait 10 days. I could get you in now. All of you. And that does not stop the Goddess of Life from trying to kill Ghilani once inside. Tolvaj could help with that. The party discusses, mentioning that Tel'Rhea doesn't know what's going on with the Queen. Tolvaj chuckles. Is that because of you? Tolvaj says no, not because of me. No, no, no... because of you... as it points at Ghilani. Tolvaj does not elaborate further.
How can you help Ghilani? Tolvaj mentioned that it can protect Ghilani from the Mother Goddess' attempts. She may be a Goddess of Life, but that does not mean she doesn't have people who will and do kill for her. Ghilani then checks in with Primus while Newt desperately wishes he could be included in on these calls. Having children is not outside the realm of possibility. Primus asks if Ghilani has every intent of confronting Tel'Rhea? Ghilani says yes. Primus would prefer he go with an... ally. She is open to Tolvaj's offer. Primus would like to see how these rules manifest.
Ghilani informs everyone that we're all good! I'll host! Primus said I could! Ghilani feels a bit different with Tolvaj involved. However, shortly after... a decision is made to not go into the Temple. Tolvaj releases Ghilani from hosting duty, standing and watching as the three boys dissolve into a yelling argument in the middle of the woods. Ghilani doesn't understand why they aren't just going to the Temple of Life NOW. We have a solution! Tolvaj is RIGHT HERE! Tolvaj waves. We can get in and do this Temple and then go the next without any delay! Declan says he doesn't WANT to bypass any more rules and regulations here. Why would we risk making Tel'Rhea more angry? Ghilani provides a chart of "badness". Just because you do this ONE THING doesn't mean you'll suddenly be in Tel'Rhea's good graces! You're associated with ME. She's going to hate you regardless. Declan insists that whatever little shred of grace they can gather is important. We shouldn't bypass all of these rules. Newt, caught in the middle, throws his hands up. Ghilani explodes: It's not going to win you as much as you might think! While we wait 10 days, Rani's family doesn't remember her. We need to get this done and get Rani's family's memories back!
Rani finally steps in. Please. Don't fight. The Lady of Dread is already ripping us apart. Ghilani, I really appreciate you wanting to do this for me. It'll be okay... but I have to agree with Declan. I'm not thinking right. I think we should go to Nacheevi, cool our heads, and then come back and deal with this. Rani pulls Moira and Ghilani into a hug... and then Ghilani pulls Tolvaj in. Tolvaj, while in the huddle, looks at Rani: "You will make a good mother."
Tolvaj promises to wait until they return. It will be here. The agreement will be that Tolvaj will keep Ghilani safe until he reaches the woods once more. It will take nothing else from Ghilani. Though it warns that everything will depend on how the conversation with Tel'Rhea goes. The group then heads back to Home Tree, resolved to head to Nacheevi in the morning. Declan asks if he can help with Six's ritual. She is not sure he can – she is dealing with a soul deal. It is an intricate one.
Rani sends to Zephus, telling him what happened and that she loves him. She sends word then to Ezra, informing him of the Lady of Dread and that she loves him too. Zephus is sorry and promises to do what he can to help, what little it may be. Ezra promises to look into the Lady of Dread. Be careful, I mentioned your name to your brother... it seemed to hurt. I love you. Meanwhile, Newt's message from Oksha is a little weird... remember Silvercove?
In the morning, Six bursts in. What is your bird DOING? Moira smiles. Oh, I asked if he could help. In Six's ritual room, Calibird is dancing and dragging chalk all around, scattering stardust. Six motions. He's speeding it up... it may take half the time now- NO THAT'S WRONG! Six runs in and begins to assist Calibird.
Newt stares at Thanatos on his shoulder. Why is he here?

Newt's Trial of Therarask

The Golden Mist fades to smog before it parts, revealing a young Yuan-Ti priestess with her arms crossed at a desk. Markus seems to be reading. She throws a book from the desk in Markus' general direction – missing horribly – before turning in your direction. "Wonderful! Can you read to me? They haven't translated these texts to braille yet and Markus is so dreadfully boring. I'd much rather listen to your voice. Please?"

Through the Mist you begin to hear the sound of laughter between bits of conversation. For a moment, you swear you hear Callon among them. When the Mist parts, you can see an open, lightly frosted doorway and voices beyond. Sage steps into your view, and raises a scale covered brow. "Are you really going to keep my grandfather waiting when he so kindly offered to host?" She stands with her arms crossed, jerking her head towards the open doorway.

You hear the sound of a grindstone on a blade before the Mist parts. Volo stands, tooth pick between his teeth as he inspects his axe. Thanatos is perched on his shoulder. You feel a weight on your own, finding a black crow perched there with glowing green eyes. Oksha stands – leather visible from beneath slightly more ornate robes. The robes of a priestess. "Oh! I'll go get Markus then!" As she bounds off, Volo turns to face you, hefting the axe over his shoulder. "Well, kid. Time to become more than a bounty hunter. The Lady of Death could use a new kind of Executioner."

Memories of Oshozi

"The God of the Hunt is not one for words. He remembered sealing what would become the disease, though didn't know such darkness would fall."

The Journal

When the end of yet another year approaches, I am reminded of the gentle snowfall that would grace the Western mountains. There is no such snowfall here, but the coolness is a welcome change. I have always been fond of the few furs that I have — a gift from Western hunters. And so I sat amidst scrolls, tomes, and other scrawlings on parchment, wrapped in a soft gray fur as I sipped upon hot tea. Emlekezes may approach, but today I am reminded of the simple pleasures of life. I will think of overseeing rites and remembering our dead tomorrow.   Today, I think of my life and what I wish to do with it beyond my religious obligations. I was born Beloved and that has brought me across the continent. It was not a choice I made... and while I cannot say that I feel a strong passion for the God of Fortune, I do care for him.   And so I am given this choice. Judas is... fascinated with the Barrier for reasons I do not quite fathom. He is a God of Commerce, Trade, and Fortune... I suppose it is in his nature to venture beyond, to seek new routes, and to open lanes of trade.   I have always had an interest in history. Ironic, I suppose, given I am an Oracle. I have found, however, that understanding the past can, quite often, provide insight into the future. And The One knows I often require assistance with deciphering this cryptic ability of mine.   It may be a futile effort, but perhaps there are lost artifacts that remain from the time before. I have written to the scholars and sages in Carmenthia and the brilliant minds of Nacheevi. Judas is excited by the prospects. It pleases me to see him happy, but... I still do not feel this spark I should feel. Perhaps this endeavor will be the spark I require.   I am trying though. I wish only I felt that it mattered more.
Dysis Judas

Hastily scrawled in one of the corners:
My dream was eerie. I remember only a man's face. I rarely dream of the past, but I have seen his face before. In a portrait on the corner of an aged parchment. Grand Priest Ihyesult. Why?
