The Fiery Isles

Life on the isles is much different than that of the mainland. Due partly to the high temps and thanks to the strange light that blankets the countryside at night. Time is a bit different here. The night for them is During the Rise and Burning Hours. Before the construction of the great cities, as the sun would rise, the isle residents would retreat down into the cold caverns. They would take the daylight hours to sleep and work underground. Then as the sun began to set and the air outside cool, they would go out in search of food, new caves, water sources, and other activities. Now, instead of heading to the caves, the cities are the refuge during the day, with the time of the Rise and Burning hours designated as the time of rest. And now, as the sun sets, the cities come to life with people flooding the streets and markets. Then, just as quickly as the sun is on the horizon, the roads become nearly lifeless.

Geography

The landscape of the Isles is that of a volcanic wasteland. The landscape is full of sharp and jagged rocks and cliff formations. Many streams, rivers, pools, and even lakes of lava carve up the hostile terrain. Daytime temperatures can soar well above 150 F during the burning hours. Even during the night, temperatures on the surface hardly drop below 90 F. What makes matters even worse is the level of humidity of the area. A dry day is 85%.
You do not have to go too deep into the caverns for you to feel the temperature plummet. Even just a few 100 feet from the top side, you can see the condensation forming on the walls. Even the shallow ones still will go hundreds of feet into the ground. Deep under the surface in the cool caverns are many streams and even lakes. Most of the regions plants and wildlife can be found underground on the isles. Due to the earthquakes, many underground aquifers are buried and cut off from these underground waterways.

Ecosystem

Due to the high temperatures of the Rocking Sea rain never hits the ground to pool. Instead, the region is in a constant state of very high humidity. This makes the surface a wasteland devoid of much. However, the high humidity condenses in the cool caves and caverns that litter the area. This water condensation is the basis of life for the isles.

Localized Phenomena

During the night due to the lava sea, the sky is lit up with a strange reddish-orange color. This counts as dim light to the entire territory.
The territory is also plagued with earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Fauna & Flora

On the surface the only plants that will grow are Razor Grass and Skyreach Sun Flower . During the day before the burning hours you can find a few animals like the Oslevshi and Drakes looking for shelter, water, and food. As resources dwindle in a set of caves wil cause the wildlife to migrate to a new area or starve to death. However, once you enter one of the many caverns around the isle you will find the base of the food chain for the island. In these caves are several types of fungi. Among them you can find:
    Club Lover
    Red Agaricus
    Branched Peel Fungus
    Amethyst Shank
    Belted Woodwart
    Pin-cushion Milk Cap
    Brittle Elfin Cup
    Petaled Mane Mushroom
    Tumbling Brittlegill
    Viscid Rooter

Natural Resources

The isles may lack many food resources, but its mineral resources more than makeup for that.
Each of the isles have a few resources that are special to each of the islands.

History

The main isle is where a group of gnomes were cut off from the mainland during the violent formation of the Rocking Sea. To survive this they entered a massive labyrinth of caves. This is were they survived for thousands of years. This is also the area where most of the Dragonborn and Drakes originated from after The Cataclysm.
