Olum (Oh-loom)
(a.k.a. Ölüm)
Olum was the god of the dead and the judge of dead souls, acting as a psychopomp. His realm was known as The Court of Souls, which became known as the Shadowfell after his death. Dead souls would arrive at his realm where he would determine their place in the afterlife, sending them to the relevant plane and under the relevant deity or being.
He is the only known deity to have been killed, as he was later replaced by Swynwyr.
Description
Olum was most frequently depicted as a very slim, gaunt man wearing an all black robe with a hood. This means that his face was very rarely shown. He was also frequently shown varyingly surrounded by animals associated with death, such as cats, cayote or jackal besides him, with a raven sat atop his shoulder. When carrying a weapon, Olum was shown wielding a scythe. Whether Olum was an evil force reaping souls or a semi-benevolent deity bringing souls to their rightful place in the afterlife was dependent on a person's culture and experience. Some viewed him as coldly and hatefully stealing living beings whilst others considered him the symbol of one's final resting place and the natural cycle of life to death.Religion
Even whilst he was a god, Olum was frequently appealed to but seldom dedicated to in worship. He would be prayed to when someone died and at funerals, where he was appealed to in order to ensure that the person's soul was sent to a pleasant afterlife. Amongst his worshippers were often undertakers or other roles associated with burial. Olum's more evil-aligned worshippers might murder people in attempts to hasten Olum's work, whilst his good-aligned worshippers might try to ease people's pain in the moments leading to their death. Due to the fact that Olum perished almost two-thousand years ago, the dates and practices of his holy days have been lost to the people of Dünya. Furthermore, any pantheon(s) he belonged to have long since shifted their practices.Alignment: Lawful Neutral
