Vedalken

Vedalken are a blue creature native to the south-west coastal region of The Still, although now mainly living in Hui Kūokoa with a dispassionate view towards life.

Description

Vedalken are tall and slender, standing almost a head taller than humans on average but weighing about the same. Their hairless skin comes in a range of shades of blue. Their eyes are darker shades of blue or violet. They lack external ears, their noses are broad and flat, and they are partially amphibious.   Despite being talkative, vedalken keep their personal lives private, and they tend to engage more with ideas than with people. They form close friendships based on mutual interests or compelling disagreements, and their interactions dwell on their thoughts about those issues rather than their feelings about them.   To members of other races, vedalken often seem cold, even emotionless. That assessment isn't fair—they feel emotion every bit as intensely as other folk do, but they are skilled at not displaying it. Cool rationality guides their actions, they make and follow careful plans, and they are patient enough to do nothing when the ideal outcome relies on such inaction.

Society

Vedalken believe that the path toward the impossible goal of perfection is paved with bricks of education, careful deliberation, and controlled experimentation. Some vedalken direct their energy toward perfecting themselves, whether by means of travel or through extensive study, and others concentrate on perfecting society through the careful drafting and application of laws.   As members of Hui Kūokoa, vedalken are active members of the nation. Those with more wanderlust act as merchants and ambassadors for the nation, where their level-headedness allows them to play the role of arbiter and advocate for the people of Hui Kūokoa. Those who remain in the land tend to act as lawmakers and, alongside like-minded Tortle delegates, see to the running of the nation.   Vedalken did not originate from the islands, but in fact hailed from the coast north of the moutains above the Magocracy of Swynwyr. Due to the constant fighting between tribes of Centaur, Leonin, and particularly Minotaur, as well as the imperialism of the Nanpō Empire and the Magocracy of Swynwyr, vedalken largely migrated towards island life owing to their semi-amphibiousness. Vedalken, alongside Locathah were among the first to join tortles in establishing Hui Kūokoa owing to their desire for piece and their belief in the ability of "monstrous race" to be civilised.

Religion

Vedalken worship the Hui Kūokoa Pantheon. Their patron god is Haole, and worshipped as the symbol of trade and hospitality owing to the vedalken's role in establishing Hui Kūokoa. Despite this, many vedalken ardently worshipped the entire pantheon and tended to select their own individual 'patron' who aligned with their personality and beliefs.
