Yelken (Yell-ken)

Yelken was the god of sailing, favourable winds, and naval combat. He was the very picture of the daring sea captain, one capable of sailing his vessel through any disaster at sea.

Description

Yelken was often portrayed as a physically strong and tanned sailor, weilding a sabre or cutlass. He was shown as being very adapt at commanding a ship and leading naval battles, although he was somewhat of a wild figure.

Religion

Yelken was worshipped as part of the pantheon of the Tripartite Blades, representing one of the key areas of skilled combat. Amongst these gods, however, he was seldom directly called upon outside of seaside towns or naval battles themselves, and was thus seen as a somewhat more lesser figure than the other two.   He was also worshipped as part of the Prosperous Voyagers, where he was seen as a necessary protection from pirates and other raiders on the sea trade. That being said, some pirates worshipped Yelken to recieve favourable winds and defeat enemies in battle.   His holy day was known as the Creaking, and was largely celebrated on the 24th of Thawing, although the date was later the more north one travelled. The day celebrated the returning of warmer winds and calmer seas, particularly in the north where ice flows began to break up towards the end of winter. The name was also a double meaning, representing the creaking of boats whilst sailing.
