Quarters

Quarters

A Threshold is a place of fleeting reality that offers no true safety. To provide said safety, people construct Quarters. These placed are imbued with Power through their construction, holding back the dark and allowing one to stay longer within a Threshold. Some build their lives in these places, there are even those born here.   It takes significant Power to construct a Quarter, and in years after one must properly maintain them. This is why even the strong do not create large Quarters. Power is too crucial to waste on idleness. Those that spend their strength on frivolities, will soon find themselves without strength left to hold onto what they consider theirs. So Quarters are always relatively small, anywhere from the size of a house to the size of a large roadside inn.   To travel is to find Power. A permanent stay in a single place, whether a world or a Threshold, will only keep one weak. Still, a Quarter can serve the purpose of a place of rest, to be with others and for a moment forget the reality of this existence. No steel can last if never given respite, no strength can last if forever tested. Do not make the mistake to consider usage of a Quarter a weakness.
To understand Quarters, one must first understand Thresholds. We travel to worlds through doorways, and Thresholds are what connects these doorways to each other. They take many shapes and forms, but what remains the same is that they are a place of hostility. There are great forms of darkness and nothingness outside the boundaries of these Thresholds, and none are immune to the risk of collapse. Even if a Threshold stands, it may waver. To sleep unprotected is to take a chance at no longer being there to wake.   It takes conscious will to hold back the dark, to establish oneself inside a Threshold. That is why sleep is so dangerous, but also things like losing focus to a party, a meal, a drink, company, despair. So we establish Pillars, to contain our Power and hold back the dark in our stead. Thus, Quarters are made.   I am not here to bore you with construction techniques. There are more methods than there are folks left to speak about them. There is but one thing that matters. A Pillar can shield you, but you cannot hide. So any Quarter will be open, Pillars marking its edge but no roof or wall to contain it. It is the absence of these barriers that serves to hold back the dark. To block it is to block detection of it, a sign of weakness that becomes a vulnerability. Make no mistake, the dark is a threat to face head on.
