Glimveil

A well established town led by a caste of Dream Walkers. Their culture has a heavy emphasis on the warrior lifestyle, especially considering their proximity to Crowbarrow and naturally dangerous areas. The society is heavily atheistic, as the key to their succession of knowledge is the spirits of the deceased being permitted to merge with a living host. The Dream Walkers throughout the town may have merged with elder relatives, close mentors, very trusted friends or loved ones.

Government

The ruler of the town is denoted by the Astral Guard, a symbolic but powerful weapon representing the need to know when to be aggressive and when to be defensive, always with the goal of protecting those under their charge. Each successor to the throne must defeat their predecessor in ritual combat, after which their souls are merged to preserve their life’s experience and strengthen Glimveil as a whole. The loss of this built up experience would be catastrophic.

Defences

Given their warrior culture, the town of Glimveil is protected by an Order of Knights. Each Veil Knight is expected to be the equivalent of a one-person army, able to handle a horde of foes or hostile monsters with minimal support, and with the succession ritual they should indeed have the collective combat experience of the many warriors who came before. They are titled as Nth Meld, honoring the line of succession, which is also denoted by the number of stripes on their shield and tallies carved on the interior.   The first Veil Knights were appointed by the original ruler of the town, and each subsequent Knight has been selected and trained by a member of the previous generation. They often take two or more Pages under their wing; the Pages serve the Knights while learning from them, spar against each other in the years of training, and before a successor is chosen fight each other for the right to challenge their mentor. As with the town's ruler, when a Knight is ready to end their service their Page is given the final test of defeating them in single combat. Upon the Knight's death, the Page will succeed them, merging their souls and inheriting their gear. Those who do not inherit their mentor's position are then free to choose for themselves how to proceed with their lives. Some continue to serve the Order by maintaining gear and mounts, many embark into the world as adventurers and mercenaries.   On the rare occasion that a Veil Knight falls in battle, their Pages are tasked with retrieving the Knight's armor and weapons. Which ever one is successful will inherit the position, becoming the first in a new line with the title of Knight Scion, erasing the stripes from the shield and starting a new tally.
