Wandling (wänd-ling)

Wandlings are native to, and the national animal of Shadeniin. They are small, bioluminescent, lizard-like creatures capable of channeling and amplifying mana through their spinal cords and out through their tails in order to create a small light source, which they use to attract insects for feeding on.   Because wandling spines naturally channel mana, they are among the most common materials used as wand cores, leading to wandlings often being hunted by mages and poachers, which has left the species endangered.   The magic industry is a central part of Shadeniin's society, so despite being an endangered species, it is legal to hunt wandlings for their spinal cords as long as the poacher possesses the proper permit. Killing a wandling without a permit is a federal crime, and punishable by ten years in prison and 250,000 Gael in fines.   The words "wandling" and "wand" have both existed since the beginning of documented history, so it is impossible to know which word inspired the other.
