Designer Lifeforms

Designer lifeforms are a so-called 'evolution' of Simulated Prehistoric Lifeforms that are created from the ground-up, rather than being based on existing or previously-existing species. Many SPLs, especially dinosaurs, are not created from their species' original DNA, and are instead facsimiles created from combining the DNA of currently existing species. However, even fossil records can great a strong starting point for genetecists to begin crafting biology from. Designer lifeforms are purely novel species, created from scratch for various purposes.

The large-scale, first fully artificial lifeform was created in 2051, when Montreux-Verrill World Biotech developed a novel species of lizard analogue, unrelated from any extant lifeforms. However, this technology would later be exploited by the criminal underworld with the creation of so-called genetic monstrosities, such as the "Mumbai Mutants" discovered in 2058. With the backing of major corporations and many of the world's elite, however, breakthroughs have been made in more refined species. These are what are considered 'designer lifeforms'.

Many designer lifeforms are bespoke, created on commission, usually as pets. One of the more famous examples of this is Joe the Monkey-Lizard, owned by famous musician X-Marx-The-Spot. A combination of chameleon and macaque, it is neither reptile nor mammal. As genetic advancements have improved in recent years, the scale of designer lifeforms has only grown larger. Several major media companies have expressed interest in the creation of fictional creatures from the fantasy genre, such as dragons or griffins. However, these have been stymied by issues more related to physics than genetics, such as the square-cube rule. However, there have been a multitude of examples of SPLs being made of cryptids, such as the Jersey Devil Simulacrum, the Loch Ness Simulacrum, and the Bigfoot Simulacrum. Some people classify these as designer lifeforms, due to their excellent external appearance compared to typical genetic monstrosities.
