Idolax (/Id-ol-ax/)

"He Who Guards the Strong"

Summary

Few are as simultaneously despised and praised as Idolax. He is a patron of tyrant-nobles, and a shield guarding those in power from the weaklings who serve them. To Idolax, there is the master and the slave, and the slave’s will is as easily thrown away as his life is taken. As peasant unrest and changing social dynamics have come to light in recent decades, Idolax has received greater appreciation; some have insisted that even the slave can become the master if he abandons the idea that he has been wronged and simply works for improvement, and others have insisted on his necessity in keeping the peasant masses at rest.

The Canon and the Way

In the Prime Canon, Idolax has a clear place as a preserver of order within society. Just like Aelis is occasionally necessary to upset the status quo, Idolax is sometimes necessary to maintain it against the growing unrest of a populace. Idolax is furthermore a symbol of decadence; when nobles grow content in their power, they are liberated to act in excess, and he preserves this right and privilege.   On the other hand, the Green Way places greater emphasis on his representation as a guardian of comfort for all, rather than just merely the nobility. Even for the capricious Fey, there are some traditions and permanent fixtures in daily life that are better left unchallenged. Be it home, be it the weekly hunt, or be it a nightly visit to the local tavern, Idolax represents the reliable aspects of daily life.

Symbology

Idolax's appearance varies, but he is often depicted as an upright Sphinx-like creature, with ram’s horns upon his head and a long, rat-like tail. Such features are inherited from his father, Cinakath's, affairs. Vain and egotistical, Idolax loves all sorts of expensive idols dedicated in his name. In particular, the jeweled grail is a symbol representing his glory, as is any animalistic statuette which is dedicated in his favor.

Rites and Worship

Clerics of Idolax are, more often than not, dark knights and war-priests in the service of the local nobility. They are the judge, jury, and executioner when it comes to delivering the law, and their authority borders on limitless. They tend to wear heavier armor in dark colors, often accompanied by saps, maces, or warhammers that can crack an enemy's skull with a single swift hit. An obsidian crown is often worn upon their head in place of a helmet, with a golden ornament inset.   Sermons to Idolax are often held in temples which double as headquarters for these justicars. They preach law and order to the populace, and are often well-received in areas with high rates of crime for their promises to clean the streets. Idolaxians are typically viewed as less corrupt than the local guard because of their higher devotions, but of course this makes them no less violent or abusive.
