The West Marches

Description

The West Marches lie south of The Rainy Country. They are the most inhabitable of the western lands, but are currently occupied by the Thalgor, which are openly hostile to any trespassers. The Thalgor wage active war against each other, and are periodically unified by their strongest chiefs, who attempt to push back eastwards. Historically, this resulted in the West March Wars. More recently, raids have been repelled before they have pushed far into the Kcalsbury Continent, and the threat has largely subsided. The threat remains full-force, however, in the actual lands of the West Marches, which are intraversable to outsider folk.   Some exploration of the West Marches has, nonetheless, been successfully done. This has primarily been done along the coast, by sailing through the Sea of Tears. Explorers have never been able to find a breakthrough where the tide of hordes ends, however, and the Sea of Tears prevents long-term and long-distance sailing due to its own dangers, curtailing further exploration until technology advances further.

Ruins in the West Marches

The existence of ruins within the West Marches is largely contentious. Some believe that humans - perhaps Gults themselves - lived within the West Marches before they were isolated by the arrival of the Thalgor. It's known that the immediate border-lands of the West Marches were occupied by the Althraxian Empire at its height, though these lands were abandoned and occupied by despots and anarchists when the Orthetians arose.

Precursors?

More contentiously, some believe that precursors to the mortal races existed within the West Marches at one point or another. The existence of such races itself is up for debate, though places like Old Ironbrand in Pharos indicates some activity before recorded history. The most widely-held belief is that the Dwarves occupied these lands before moving onto the Holds and deep beneath the ground.
