Dimitri Silverbeard

Written by Salen

The Gearsmith

Dimitri Silverbeard is a legend to most of the people of Tamia. Credited with discovering the lost art of Gearwork, he was a genius that had visions of a better life for every dwarf. He was a strong dwarf, being a blacksmith most of his life and went on to help create the Gearsmith guild and many of that guilds inventions. He was supported by his fellow smiths, even when his ideas seemed ridiculous or insane. Often times he was told he couldn't make things do what he wanted, but time and again he prevailed and his vision was seen as miraculous.

Struggles

One of the only things he struggled with was his own conscience. In his line of work he often developed weapons and other inventions that would result in the harm of other races. He struggled with the effect it would have on the world more times than most, and there were some instances that he stopped the production on some of them, being too violent even for the hardened dwarf (The repeating rifle suggested by Donagar Gatling was one such veto) He died in the year 256 when his forge blew unexpectedly, filling the entire room with sulphuric flames and almost caving in the entire complex. His body was never recovered.

Legacy

One of the things that lives on after Dimitri's death is the fact that his name is synonymous with a better life. His inventions like the Gearwheel and Gearrail system are used by everyone and even his smaller accomplishments, like toys for children, are remembered fondly by his name.
Bellip Ironcleft opened her gift under the Kristmas tree and her eyes went wide. It was a Silverbeard Doll and she had always wanted one. She frantically wound the crank in the back of the doll and saw its eyes open and come to life. This was going to be her best friend and she would take her everywhere. She rushed to hug her father and mother and rained kisses upon them as they laughed. This was the best Kristmas ever.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

As a smith that worked for many decades, Dimitri was very well toned and his strength was legendary. His physical endurance was just as talked about, as he would work at the forge until the sun rose (even though he couldn't see it in the depths of his mountain city). Even in his last years he was in great condition and it came as a shock when his forge blew that fateful day.

Identifying Characteristics

His silver beard is the most recognizable thing about him. He wasn't born with it, but it grew in that way years ago once he burned most of it off at the forge one fateful day. It is usually decorated with tiny gears, making him stand out.

Apparel & Accessories

He was never seen without his alloy forge hammer

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Born during the First War, Dimitri Silverbeard was always a curious child. He was destined for greatness (So says his mother) and took to creating things very early on. He explored the tunnels of his homeland and knew every inch of the caverns surrounding the city of Ingmar, the southernmost city in the Nation of Nagar. He became an apprentice smith and went through dwarven life much as any other dwarf would, until the war ended. Once the war was over, the dwarves had much to rebuild, and Dimitri was one of the smiths called upon to help with a secret project. He was tasked to find a better way to either defeat the elves magic, or to withstand it. They experimented with various ways to construct armor and weapons over the next few months to no avail. Then it happened. During that year, almost by accident, Dimitri discovered the concept of gears. He was trying to forge metal links together, mainly to create a better armor, and when he rotated the breastplate to check the other side, it rolled so much better than most ridged armors.....he had unknowingly created tiny gears. His mind took what he was seeing and the world opened up before him. What else could be made to move better with things like this? The next few months he got together with the six other smiths and worked on the very first prototype to show the King. The rest is history.

Education

Dimitri was a blacksmith for many years before his discovery. He was considered a Master

Accomplishments & Achievements

Dimitri was credited with inventing the first self driving gearcart for mining. He made one with a small crank hat turned gears. Those gears moved the wheels without being pulled by a pony in the tunnels. He went on to help create the Gearsmith guild, and was one of its highest members for years (level 7) He also is credited with many of the first prototypes of things like the first Gearwheel(a small vehicle that sat two people and was more for function than comfort), The first repeating crossbow, and the lead designer of the Gerarail system. He is also rumored to have created the Dwarven Coinsquares yet he never took the credit, instead choosing to say that the entire Gearsmith Guild had a hand in its creation for the betterment of the race as a whole.

Failures & Embarrassments

Over the many years of inventing he had many setbacks and failures, but none of them made any impact in his fame and legend enough to be recorded.

Intellectual Characteristics

Dimitri was a forward thinker, coming up with things that no one had even considered, His mind almost seemed to work on another level compared to all around him.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Dimitri dreamed of a time where life would be made easier for dwarves everywhere. Though in his later years he viewed weapons as a backwards step in the evolution of the races,, he was still proud whenever one of his gearsmiths produced something magnificent

Wealth & Financial state

Dimitri Silverbeard was a very wealthy individual. Upon his death though, most of his wealth was left to the Blacksmith guild and the Gearsmith guild. Once that was settled, there was still enough money was left for his clan and immediate family to live comfortable for the rest of their lives

Competition

One of Dimitri's most fiercest competitors in his later years was, ironically Donager Gatling. He was bitter that he had his own visions shot down in the Gearsmith guild so he went on to receive private funding from the The Blackstone Family . In 200 he had his own line of weapons, yet he was still only second best. When Dimitri's forge blew, Donager was the first one that they questioned, yet his alibi was airtight, being at the Blackstone villa all that day and night.
