Khorvaire is no stranger to substance use. The continent as a whole even has a term for those who regularly use: "dulcets". Ranging from casual-use to cripplingly-addictive, one does not have to travel far in a civilized settlement to encounter one of the following drugs.
Larkleaf
Probably the most common drug in Khorvaire, this mildly addicting depressant is loved by almost all substance users. It was legal in each of the
Five Nations, and remains legal today. As far as the nascent nations of Khorvaire go, their legality remains questionable; it is unclear whether they have even had time to form laws in regards to drugs such as larkleaf. (The exception to this is
Zilargo; the gnomes have happily accepted larkleaf as a perfectly legal substance.)
Larkleaf is the origin of the term "dulcet", as it induces a mellow and relaxing feeling to whoever uses it. The calming effect becomes extremely apparent on the dulcet's face; hence the name. It is often used in a recreational setting, as it makes almost any conversation seem incredibly interesting to the larkleaf user. Additionally, it can cause the user to hover dreamily a few inches off the ground in some cases; the stronger and more potent it is, the more likely the hover effect is to take place. In the smaller races, such as halflings and gnomes, there are common reports of minor hallucinations as well. (The hallucinations are nothing harmful- in fact, most gnomes report the hallucinations as "suspiciously pleasant.")
Larkleaf started as a naturally-growing plant, but after its effects were discovered,
Aundairian herbologists combined their botanical prowess with proprietary magical techniques to enhance the growth of the plant. Consequentially,
Aundair is the primary exporter of the plant. As it is herb-like in nature, the most common method of ingestion is through brewing it as a tea. It is said to add a pleasantly earthy, herbal flavor to the concoction.
Though larkleaf tea is most common, it is possible to smoke it in a pipe, exuding a similar scent to the tea, though with a twinge of a burnt odor. Additionally, some dulcets enjoy incorporating larkleaf into different types of foods, such as baking it into breads and even using it as a garnish on an elegant chicken entrée.
Dreamlily
Dreamlily in its base form is an innocent-looking, light blue flower that looks similar to a miniature chrysanthemum. It has humble origins as a highly effective painkiller that first saw use in the
Last War. It was an import from a distant continent; only the most highly ranking members of
House Jorasco knew its exact origins. However, as the war progressed, its true effects became clear. Its extremely addictive nature was too dangerous for commercial use, and so it was outlawed by every nation. Now, the narcotic is a major facet of the
Boromar Clan's operations, though how the Clan managed to obtain a source for the drug is unclear.
While dreamlily is certainly an effective painkiller, it also causes an extreme euphoric rush. It also smells very pleasant, taking on a different scent for each user. The minute details of the euphoria are different for each user; some say they experience the presence of
Tira Miron, while others say they drift along an infinite expansive of golden-hued clouds. However, once the euphoria and relief of any physical pain ceases, the user is recessed into a gloomy, reclusive state.
The most likely reason for the ignorance towards the true effects of dreamlily was because of the way it was ingested. In the
Last War, it was generally consumed in its base form hastily alongside rations. Its effects are still felt in this form, but it was discovered to be much more potent when smoked. Thus, must dreamlily-using docents prefer to smoke it with a traditional pipe, unless they need to be exceedingly discreet, in which it can still simply be consumed raw. Rumor has it that the
Boromar Clan is developing a "dreamlily capsule", in which they are combining the powerful effects of smoked dreamlily with the circumspection of raw dreamlily.
Dragon's Blood
This viscous crimson liquid is one of the most dangerous drugs in all of Khorvaire. It is an alchemical concoction that comes exclusively from
Droaam, and its price reflects this rarity. The nation of monsters is not in a hurry to disclose how it is created, nor how it was discovered. It is illegal in all of the older nations of Khorvaire, and even some of the nascent nations have been outspoken against its use. (Even
Zilargo).
When consumed, this substance enhances the powers of a spellcaster in seemingly random ways. Sometimes it will increase the length of a spell's effects, introduce a new type of damage to a spell, or even multiply the magical creations of a spell. If one were to discover how to control the effects, and negate the unpleasant consequences of the drug, it could be very dangerous - and/or profitable. (Legend has it that the mad wizard Udrazaximon Bob performed all sorts of experiments with the substance, and ended up leveling his town with a wildly enhanced fireball after he mistook a vial of dragon's blood for a glass of his evening wine.)
While it is physiologically possible to simply drink dragon's blood, it has such an incredibly unpleasant texture and taste that it is almost impossible to consume this way (unless your name is Udrazaximon Bob). Besides, its effects are not felt as greatly as if it was injected the traditional way via syringe. There are even magically-enhanced syringes on the black market, ones that when administered, will magically extend farther into your bloodstream for a more precise injection.
The addictive nature of dragon's blood is not exactly psychoactive, as with dreamlily, but rather lies in the feeling of power a spellcaster feels when under the effect of the drug. However, if one does become hooked, or even simply uses it several times, it is almost certain to devastate their life from the inside. The alchemical concoction is known to slowly induce a feeling of paranoia and panic, one that eventually envelops the user and causes them to meet a grisly end, almost always by their own hand. One might wonder whether this is by design by the makers of the substance in
Droaam.
Amanita
Unlike the other substances, amanita is a class of drugs, rather than a specific substance. It is an umbrella term to refer to the various hallucination-inducing mushrooms and fungi, most commonly found in places like the
Eldeen Reaches and
Q'Barra. While there are several different species of amanita, like conocybe and webcaps, almost all of them share common effects and methods of ingestion. The exception is podostroma, which indeed looks similar to conocybe and actuates hallucinations. However, podostroma-induced hallucinations are said to be experienced in shades of saturated blacks, and feature terrifying, otherworldly apparitions that leave psychically-damaging impressions on the mind for weeks.
As mentioned previously, aminata is widely known for its strong hallucinatory effects. Aside from witnessing awe-inspiring, inexplicable illusions, aminata dulcets also report an altered flow of time, sometimes stretching out a minute into seeming days. If one begins to use aminata too often, they develop an inability to distinguish their hallucinations from the real world. Additionally, once the metaphysically impossible visions seen by aminata users end, the user often feels an overwhelming sickness that can take weeks to recover from. The mushrooms and fungi are usually consumed like a normal food, and it is unclear whether or not they are addictive.
Aminata can be difficult to find and properly identify; there have been several occasions where an individual thinks they have stumbled upon a field of webcaps, only to discover that they are toxic mushrooms in the worst way possible. It takes an individual who is well-versed in the world of fungi to even know where to begin to look, and an even deeper knowledge to know if they are truly safe once found. Aminata is technically illegal in the civilized nations of Khorvaire, but it is so rarely found outside the wilderness that the law against it is rather pointless.
Porphyry
Perhaps even more exclusive than aminata, and even dragon's blood, is the crystal porphyry. The rock-like substance is found exclusively in the
Mror Holds, and the dwarves who dwell there are in no hurry to be sharing the drug, given how difficult it is to obtain in the depths of the mountains. Centuries of using the drug have essentially numbed the dwarves to the negative effects of the drug, leaving them with enhanced sensory perception and a sense of euphoria, though milder than those who have not become accustomed to it. Not even the continental agents of the
Boromar Clan have managed to obtain any of the drug, neither through coercion nor force.
If a non-dwarf manages to get their hands on the crystal, they experience an incredible feeling of enhanced senses and exhilaration, even greater than that of dreamlily. There have been cases where users say they can count the feathers on the hippogriff flying above, or perfectly identify when a rat rips ass hundreds of feet away. If you eat anything after ingesting porphyry, it is possible to have a simple meal and taste every single flavor possible in the food, down to the texture of the yeast cell in the bread. Supposedly, one does not become hungry for weeks after doing so.
The effect is so great that some become overwhelmed with the sheer amount of information being processed. After the effects wear off, however, is a sure wave of nausea and insomnia. The drug is rather addictive, and long-term use can lead to loss of sight, hearing, or even smell. Curiously, the sense of taste seems to remain intact.
The law's stance on the drug is a bit of a gray area. It is technically illegal for anyone to use the substance, but if it is a dwarf using the drug, it is viewed the same way that larkleaf is.
The most effective method of ingesting porphyry is by crushing it into a fine dust and snorting it. (If done incorrectly, the crystal could become stuck in the nasal canal, and you would sooner die than smell every possible scent in a several mile-large radius.) However, the dwarves do not bother pulverizing the crystal; centuries of consuming the drug has granted them the ability to merely chew the rock-hard crystals. Supposedly, it tastes like almonds.
"it can cause the user to hover dreamily a few inches off the ground" hehe literally high
