Session 29: Leaving Graywall

General Summary

Toox reveals to the party her aberrant Dragonmark. The party takes this development in stride (though some with a touch of hesitation). Ripper is interested in helping her research the dragonmark because "having more like Toox would be a good thing". That comment was viewed with skepticism.

Simon Twoorb also quietly starts training with Ice on weapons. They decide to start with a quarterstaff... for safety.

Ripper also investigates Xor'chylic's stasis pod. His research leads him to discover the pod, if it exists, lies buried underneath the lava river running through Graywall. In addition, working to uncover this is likely to upset Xor'chylic, as he appears to be the one who put it there. Ripper decides to set aside this line of research for the time being.
Feldspar Merrlin and Ninarin slip notes to the party during Session 28.5: The Freeing of Rossy inviting them to dinner at their own inn at 7pm. The party decide to attend. They are shown to an upscale dining room with a lavish feast. After about 15 minutes or so, Feldspar and Ninarin arrive. They appear to be fully packed and ready to leave town. Feldspar shares a few key details as he loads a problematic amount of food into a bag of holding:
  • Sergeant Clint is dead. Feldspar killed him and put the body in the lava. Apparently Clint was too great a risk to Dox, and was of no redeemable value. Feldspar asks the party to stop investigating the disappearance. The party, not caring about Clint one iota, agree.
  • Hurda is going to ask the party to stop along the way to The Great Crag to help out a small town. He encourages the party to help, as it will mean a lot to her- something about a valuable resource.
  • He knows the party will be meeting The Daughters of Sora Kell soon, so he offers advice: Look them in the eye, speak plainly, and be ready to take a punch. The Daughters (and the citizens) respect strength and abhor people without purpose.

With that, and some light mockery, Feldspar leaves the party. He explains he's heading back into Breland (a country in which he is a wanted man) to deal with some people who have hurt folks he cares about. Ninarin offers a slight nod to the room, and a brief moment with Simon, and the two leave.
After their departure, Celosia Senho shares the results of her own research. She believes they must get back to Sharn as quickly as possible, as the lack of responses anyone has received from their loved ones sent through House Sivis suggest bad things may be afoot. Tarryn suggests they use his contacts through House Orien to be certain a message makes it through.

Before they can do that, though, the issue of the bill comes up. The party discovers the tab- 15gp- was billed directly to The Throne. Znir Pact guards show up shortly afterward looking for Feldspar, who has of course already departed.

With nothing else to be done on that score, the party head to The Kennels to send an emergency message back to Sharn. As they cross the bridge, the find the Kennels having an impromptu celebration. They interpret the freeing of Rossys Fernmouse to mean they "defeated" Xor'chylic. Upon seeing the party, they heap praise and the like on them. This is not popular with the party whatsoever.

Once at the House Sivis messaging house, Tarryn sends a priority message on behalf of Simon to Professor Makeda ir'Zana. The party decides to focus on the safety of loved ones, so Professor ir'Zana is asked to verify Tarryn and Celosia's families are alright. With nothing else to be done, most of the party heads back to bed. The only exceptions are Ripper, who messes with the revelers by introducing fast-growing dream lily and extremely bad ideas, and Tarryn, who doubles back and sleeps in the House Sivis message room waiting for a response. The response comes at 6am, confirming both families are fine. Professor ir'Zana had two separate groups visually confirm the family members were healthy and safe, though they did so from a distance to keep them from coming to possible harm from whatever action the demon they are hunting might take.

In addition, the party tries to cash the 800 gold promissory note given to them by House Deneith, but find the entire Graywall chapter in shambles. There is literally no one of high enough rank to sign off to release the funds. They do recover the 400 gold owed by House Kundarak.

With all that settled, the team meet once more with Hurda, who does in fact ask them to offer aid to the small hamlet of Yiklark. The party chooses to make haste, with Tarryn and Celosia driving through the night to arrive at Yiklark the next morning. Simon offers them both a special type of coffee, but they decline.

During the journey, the party discovers the Quickling Network. These quicklings use a designated track along the side of the main road to relay messages. Interfering, crossing, or even touching the roadway gives the quicklings permission to do as they wish to whomever does so- and the results are often deadly.

The party learns this farming town moves locations, as the crops planted drain the soil. The majority of this is kept secret, the crops produced are used in the processing of dragonshards, making it extremely valuable. The party sets up a few towers on the outskirts of the town, and visited the town's nameless inn/tavern/meeting spot. The proprietor and owner, Doth, serves food and provides the basic outline for what is needed. Toox spends some time with the bugbears, learning several new Goblin words that she really shouldn't repeat.

The town has been harassed by some kind of monster. People and animals have gone missing, and the Znir Pact sent to investigate has also gone missing. No one has any idea what has happened. Hult gathered knowledge of the local terrain, along with Ripper's speaking with animals, and together t determined where to start looking for the beast. Celosia, exhausted, takes Simon up on the "coffee" he offered previously. She is definitely no longer tired. On their way, however, they were waylaid by an old gnoll farmer who held them captive by casting "Old Man Rambles On Without Giving You A Way Out" for about 20 minutes.
