EooD Session 32: No Illithids...Yet
General Summary
Month 1, Week 3, Year 901
Day 8 in the Underdark
The Dark Souls spent several hours that evening riding through the Underdark towards illithid territory. Nineveh gained some valuable information about these mind flayers from the Hainaut family library, but without anybody capable of casting 'Tiny Hut' the party was forced to camp out in the open wilderness. Skyler and Allexander flirted during their watch, Allexander's younger brother Arnulf made awkward small talk with Verity, and Jael noticed some strange humanoid creature moving towards the camp during her watch. The creature looked and spoke like Jael's long-lost older sister Raina, but the cleric wasn't fooled. Having Verity wake up the rest of the party, a fight broke out as this Raina illusion revealed itself to be a memory-stealing creature known as an oblex. A couple more showed up to join in the fight, but they were all quickly dispatched by the party and Poolp's paralyzing whip while the largest oblex was polymorphed into a rabbit by Skyler. The encounter was unnerving, especially for all the Hainauts in the party, but the group managed to get some more rest before continuing ahead into towards the illithid camp. Day 9 in the Underdark
Long used to cramped tunnels and low ceilings, the Underdark had now expanded into a vast expanse of canyons and cliffs on as the party ventured north from Dromire. With help from Arnulf and Verity, the Dark Souls discovered a stretch of land with deep chasms stretching out for miles on either side. A mountain range of stalagmites rose hundreds of feet towards the Underdark's vast ceiling, but the party couldn't find any signs of an illithid settlement. Jael cast 'Sending' on Allexander's mother Marwen, learning that she was staying inside a building known as the Broken Tower within the illithid camp. Nineveh, having spent the morning transcribing spells from Seizer's spellbook, leaped at the opportunity to take her mind off of the deep gnome's creepy poems and marginalia. While Arnulf tried to make awkward small talk with her, Nineveh summoned her owl familiar Merlin to fly around the stalagmites and search for any broken towers. It took some time, but as Merlin tried to rest on one of the stalagmites the familiar fell straight through the rock and revealed a patch of stone to be nothing but an illusion! Beneath these illusory rocks Nineveh/Merlin discovered the illithid settlement, one giant stone ziggurat looming over a clearing of smaller houses and fields. A lopsided tower stood not too far from the central structure, and this new intel helped the party deduce that this must be the Broken Tower mentioned by Marwen. With a clear destination in mind, the party split up into two groups of four to slowly sneak their way into the illithid camp. Arnulf and Verity both cast 'Pass Without Trace' to keep the party safe from detection, and for the most part this plan worked. A pack of quaggoths appeared between the two groups during a routine patrol of the area, but Arnulf's group dispatched with the brainwashed quaggoths in a matter of seconds. The last of the creatures to be killed spoke in an unsettling voice about how the party would make for satisfying meals, keeping the group on edge as they prepared to pass the point of no return.
