Miko's Gambit

I'm struggling to find the strength to even write this one, but I owe it to Fredricka.

Slappy, Gill, Jack and Bork found my god-daughter, Miko, as a guest of the Duke Pitzovtolos in Pizol Springs. Fearing the return of William 'Whisper' Bregan Miko had taken 7 guildmembers hostage there after determining that one of them was an imposter and a traitor. She ambushed our agents in the throne room to confirm none of them were shapeshifting or otherwise hiding under an illusion - not that the ambush went particularly well for her, but it seems Gill in particular reacted well and brought everyone to their senses.

On discovering Gill could, with effort, detect thoughts and possibly identify the imposter, Miko and our agents took the night to rest, but were interrupted by the sound of a figure in Whisper's form breaking into the jail. After a brief fight this intruder was slain along with the imposter Miko had indeed taken prisoner. However this proved to be a distraction from the thieves' main target, a book written by Old Gus detailing a new way to make Guild Tokens. A third form broke into the Duke's bedroom and stole that book.

Miko and our agents gave chase, and I was able to intercept them and help them corner the thief. After they took Whisper's form, I tried a more direct approach and burned their shapeshifting form away.

To my horror, and sadness, and perhaps eternal regret, I found the figures true form. It was Fredricka, 'Fred-the-Red', who fell in battle against Nathrael during Guildfall. Half of her remained intact, while the other half was...thorny. Twisted. Rotten. Like others have described Lady Jade. Showing no sign of recognising any of us, she lashed out, and we were forced to slay her, only for her form to crumple into weeds and rotten bark and drift away on a wind to the north. I doubt we've seen the last of her.

I still have no idea how I'm going to break this news to her brother. I'm on my way downstairs to do this now. Of Old Gus' book there was no sign, and at least one of the bodies of the Whisper impersonators disappeared while we were fighting Fred in the courtyard. Miko will stand trial for her actions, but given we've found at least 3 would-be infiltrators I hope the council will find she has been at least partly vindicated. But what concerns me is why they would be chasing secrets to the crafting of Guild tokens. The Tree is in our Guild Hall. There's no way any non-member could use a token even if they could craft one, and in her current state Fredricka couldn't possibly still be connected to our Tree. Wintergreen would surely sense it if she was.

To Fred - I do hereby swear by our forefathers to end your torment. To the other fallen of Guildfall, may you rest in peace.
