Seeing how armored his shin was, I decided to make the best of an unfortunate situation. I stuck my scimitar through his boot and under his toenail. The howls were hilarious."

Grignul was raised by his Hobgoblin kinsmen in a communal camp in the area of Pinegrove, the entire clan acting as his parents. He had the values of honor, loyalty, and discipline instilled into him from a young age through combat training and extreme tests of skill and endurance. After passing all tests he was presented and besting his swordsmanship instructor, he was sent on an Honor Hunt; a coming of age ritual.
He was stripped of all but a loincloth, allowing ceremonial paints to be applied to his skin. On his way out of the gate, he was handed a scimitar. It would be his sole companion during the Hunt. He strode out of the camp and into the snow, in search of his quarry: a Manticore.
His search lasted a week. He survived on what he could forage and animals he could hunt, slowly picking his way into the mountains. At the end of the week, he had tracked a Manticore to a cliff-side cave. What followed was a blur of blades and blood. Somehow, he had managed to dispatch his prey, only suffering four deep furrows carved into his chest by the creature's claws in return.
After field-dressing the monster and fashioning it's skin into a heavy cloak and some fur-lined foot wraps, he took the stinger as a trophy. Departing the cave, he beamed and his heart filled with pride. That pride did little to banish the dread blooming in the back of his mind as he first took notice of the black smoke billowing from the horizon. In the direction of his home.
After a few days he had slogged his way back to his village. The camp's structures had been completely destroyed and his tribesmen butchered. The ground was thick with bloody mud. The only clue as to the identity of the marauders was a collection of white dragon scales in which had been drilled small holes, presumably so they could be fashioned into a scale mail. All signs pointed toward Frost Giants as they were the only creatures in the area surrounding Pinewatch that could dispatch a dragon.
An oath of vengeance was sworn and sealed in blood.

Ten years ago, Grignul Yhigs took in an urchin he found on the streets of Tymora's Delta. Though she was only 13 years old, Grignul saw in her a fierce determination to survive. Thinking back to his own origins, Grignul couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt for even having the passing thought of not attempting to help her find herself as he had found himself.
