When absorbed into the bloodstream either by ingestion, inhalation in the form of smoke, or absorbed through a mucous membrane, it increases neural activity in areas of the brain devoted to complex thought. This increased speed of thought typically exceeds the ability of the user's ability to process. This inability to cope leads to an increase in glandular excretion of the stress hormone, cortisol.

Manufacturing process

After harvesting the mushrooms, they are placed in a narrow-meshed basket and hung above a fire, high enough that the flame will not burn them but within the effective range of the heat so that the moisture contained within the fungus evaporates, leaving a dried and brittle white-stemmed and red-brimmed husk. 

The stems are discarded as they serve no purpose in this process. The caps are then pulverized in pestle. The resulting powder is collected, measured, valued, and sold.

Significance

This drug provides cognitive stimulation at the cost of physical fatigue and increased psychological stress and strain. While some may view the downsides as prohibitive, others may see them as being outweighed by the enhanced intellectual efficacy.
