Elf

"The oldest of the Fae and the first of the sapient species to do magic naturally. They descend from humans who worshipped Hecatl and embodied him by roaming. Many have abandoned the nomadic lifestyle, but they have settled along their migratory paths, inexplicibly drawn to areas rich in the natural flows of magical energy." -Dverwin Stonesinger

Basic Information

Anatomy

Elves are near indistinguishable from Humans. They vary in height, weight, and bodily structures with the key differences being the range of eye color and their ears. Elven eye colors tend to being light blues, browns, greens, yellows, and purples. Their ears have a point instead of rounded, the length of the ear varies depending on the ethnicity of the elf. For example, "Wood Elves" have longer ears. Some ethnicities have different skin colors as well, such as the "High Elves" or "Fae Born" having shades of blue.

Genetics and Reproduction

Despite their different evolutionary path from other races, they are capable of cross breeding with humans and orcs. Like their human counterparts, they reproduce sexually with the female carrying, on average, a single offspring for approximately 280 days. Elves give birth to live young.

Growth Rate & Stages

Like humans, elves experience several growth stages with little changes. They start as 'babies', graduating to 'toddler' when they reach about a year and a half to two years of age. Toddlers are capable of walking, learning to talk, curious, testing boundaries of their family, and beginning to come into their magic. Small issues may arise such as overheating, far reaching stink, and projectile bodily fluids.   Once they reach seven or eight years of age, they are considered children. They are more like their adult counterparts at this stage, though not yet having reached their full potential. This is the formative stage where the growing body and mind of the human is properly nourished.   Adolescents go through a change in their biology, their bodies changing to prepare for their reproductive cycles. With these changes comes various side effects. Pustules pop out all over their faces, they become moody and violent, the male's voice squeaks and cracks as it grows deeper, new hairs grow in some places and darkens in others. Particularly in males, this is the stage where they begin growing facial hair.   Adulthood is reached once their bodies have settled down from the changes of becoming young men and women, typically in their twenties. Adults are the peak stage of the human life cycle, lasting about twenty to thirty years.   Venerability sets in after the fifty year mark for most humans, some earlier or later depending on the level of care and self care they receive. They begin to lose strength and height at this stage, yet are at the peak of their mental fortitude.

Ecology and Habitats

Unlike their human counterparts, elves tend to reside in places of heavy magical energies. They also tend to be more respectful of their residences, gently bending their natural surroundings in permanent settlements to have minimal impact. Nomads take only what they need and try to leave little to no trace.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Elves are omnivorous creatures with similarly displayed sexual dimorphism as observed in humans, i.e. females are more capable of picking out edible plant matter from poisonous ones, while men were more capable with bringing down prey. Both show similar prowes in trapping and fishing.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Elves are distributed across all known continents, the second largest sapient population.    A high concentration of elven kind can be found on Iarlund and Batolund, several elven kingdoms have been established on each. Vasla has the lowest concentration of elves. Northern Fuarvald hosts a moderate concentration of elves, with fewer in the south.

Common Taboos

It is taboo to touch another's hair without permission once an elf is old enough to give consent.

History

Elves are the second youngest of sapient species on Eldris. They have naturally evolved from high exposure to natural magical energies. Despite being a younger race, they rose to the top with their natural abilities. The High Elves (Fae Born as they call themselves) were the first to make permanent settlements. The "Common" or "Wood" elf tend to be a mix of settled and nomadic. They are often the ones seen among human society as well.   Common elves were ever kind enough to 'lower' themselves and take in humans under their wings. Human kind thrived under their teaching and direction, allowing several regional groups to progress faster than their unmentored counterparts. High Elves, mimicking High Fae society, sometimes took humans as pets.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Elves revere the high Fae as the pinnacle of sophistication and refinement. Humans are creatures to be wary of due to their mimicry of the worst traits of other races. Orcs are more trustworthy than humans to elves, but they still will not turn their backs on the seafarers. Kindlings and halflings are viewed as abominations. Dwarves are seen as equals, though rarely interacted with.
