Chapter 2: The Deepening Dark
General Summary
We meet our heros in a dark, ransacked home, late at night on the 20th of Laeroth. Having followed a mysterious elven figure into the home of Linn Millea they are suddenly attacked by three large, homegrown Assassin Vines. Our heroes came out of the attack virtually unharmed, but the mysterious figure, who assisted in the destruction of the vines, looked badly hurt. After a brief questioning they found that her name was Falaern, and she was in town to check on her friend, Linn.
Lenihlra, followed a blood trail to the back of the home and found a mangled corpse of a human man in the bushes behind the home. After fetching the rest of the party, they found three items of note. Inhe found a patch showing gold stars crossed by a sword on a field of dark green as well as a small opal. Jacquora found a missive, somehow barely touched by blood, that read the following:
Mads,
I cannot get through to Wes. Tell him that his group is behind schedule. They were supposed to be in the capitol two weeks ago! You and yours must arrive before Loras' Day. Bring any you find. Take The Coastal Road - it is less travelled, especially this close to the anniversary of the emperor's demise. Above all: be discrete. We cannot have a repeat of Drifandi. Depending on the manner of delivery, I will double your reward. Damaged goods take longer to fix and cost more gold.
Blessed be your path,
P
The group questioned Falaern further and found that she, like Lenihlra, was a magic user. It seemed that many of her friends in Moldoryn had gone missing in the past weeks. She was supposed to meet Linn at The Golden Lobster that night. She revealed that both she and Linn were not from Moldoryn and that they had grown up together and studied together. They studied the letter and surmised that Linn had been captured, likely in a similar manner like Falaern's other friends, and was being taken to the capital. Falaern, offered to pay the group 20 platinum each, with a forward of 2 platinum, for their help in locating Linn. Jacquora and Lenihlra took the money, Inhe refused as she just wanted to find her neighbor safe and sound.
The group then made their way to the The Leaping Lich to find goods. Lenihlra, sensing a possible upmarking in prices, negotiated the prices down. Finally, the group found their way to J.C. Ponies. A small, sparrow-like Tengu was running the shop. She rented out four horses for the following prices: 3 horses at 2 silver pieces per week per horse, and 1 horse at 1 silver piece and 5 copper pieces per week. Falaern left a deposit of 5 gold which could be redeemed at any government approved horse rental establishment at the end of the journey. Inhe came into possession via a absolutely wonderful artistic deal, a small, sun-like glass art piece in blues, greens, and yellows. The Aarakocra wrote Inhe's name on the bottom and promised to keep the art safe in Moldoryn. Finally, hardy mares were given out to each traveller.
Lenihlra was given a brown and white paint horse named Muchi, Jacquora was given a red and white horse named Seth, Inhe was given a large black workhorse named Bindi, and Falaern was given a brown horse with a white nose named Gino.
The group rode about an hour longer out of the city and made camp just outside the edges of the Marasay Forest in the early morning hours of the 21st of Laeroth.
The terrifying Assassin Vines, three of which attacked the heros in Linn's home. Perhaps grown by Linn herself as some sort of protection or maybe even pets.
