Alberta Sharpe
Grand Sheriff Alberta Sharpe
Born to a blacksmith and a tailor in the Recfreran city of Nanabozbo, Alberta Sharpe was given a full and supportive education thanks to the wealth and positions of her parents. She had a happy childhood, enjoying life in one of the wealthier districts of the city. She was pursuing a career as a merchant, and taking advanced business education courses when it was interrupted by the outbreak of war between the Mersan Union and Recfrere. Although she had not considered enlisting in the military, as the war dragged on, she was conscripted into the armed forces in 990 AF. She was immediate sent to a front line regiment.
During the Opella War, the tides of battle shifted back and forth along the Mersan/Recfrere border, with little change and the capture of few settlements. The border regions of both areas were ravaged, and Alberta witnessed atrocities on both sides of the conflict. In one case towards the end of the war, a group of Recfreran soldiers had begun raiding and looting a small village within Recfrere itself. Outraged, Alberta publicly decried her commander and others, calling for prosecution against them. She was initially imprisoned for treason, but the Assembly of Sheriffs stepped in and ruled in her favor. Her destiny became set, as she believed the Sheriffs were the best hope for justice in the kingdom.
The end of the war brought a new focus on education for Alberta, as she studied law at the University of Viracocha. After passing her courses, she was appointed a judge by the Sheriff of Nanabozbo in 996, and she returned home to administer the law. She married a close childhood friend when she returned, building a new life and family. During her career as a judge, she was well known for even-handedness in practice regardless of race or wealth. She was deemed incorruptible and actually survived three different assassination attempts from various criminal elements. When the last Sheriff died in 1001, she was elected to the position of Sheriff of Nanabozbo herself, and focused upon cleaning house of corruption. She was triumphant for the most part, bringing another four assassination attempts against her and her family, all unsuccessful.
In 1022, the death of the former Grand Sheriff opened up elections among the sheriffs of the kingdom. During the gathering in Viracocha, Alberta made a substantial impression upon her fellow sheriffs. She advocated eloquently for the enforcement of law equally and the removal of corruption. Thanks to her reputation, those who spoke against her fell under suspicion of being corrupt themselves, and she won the vote among her peers in a landslide, becoming the new Grand Sheriff. She has since undertaken a relentless campaign against corruption in Recfrere, supported by the king. This has led to constant butting of heads with the Assembly of Towns and its leader Nasnohloh Jike.
