Grimaldo Gallia
Department Head Grimaldo Gallia
Grimaldo Gallia was born a Forardi citizen in Alfredstown, a community near to the border of the Kingdom of Bamard. His parents were trappers, frequently going out into the surrounding woods to gather furs for trade to merchants. They had a poor lifestyle, but Grimaldo grew up knowing the woods intimately, becoming quite skilled at his parents' craft. When he entered into his twenties, however, his parents were killed in a fight with a bear, and Grimaldo decided to abandon the family business in his grief, and joined the Forardi Department of the Army.
Grimaldo was recruited as a scout, and proved highly adept at his role. He led numerous sorties into both Bamard and the Sypi Confederacy to scout out tribal and Bamardi military positions to help increase intelligence over their activities. Although his actions could hardly be called highly publicized, his skill was obvious, and he began to rise quickly through the ranks. He was aided in this endeavor after his discovery of one of the previous Department Heads' dalliances with a Bamardi woman, who turned out to be a spy. Using this information, he was able to advance his career ever further, keeping pressure on the leaders above him through blackmail.
He eventually was promoted to the rank of colonel and given a command of a regiment in 1005 AF. Here, he began to gain notoriety as a clever leader and protective of the lives of his men. He earned loyalty fast among the lower ranks but wasn't given the chance to display his other skills until the "River War" of 1014. In this conflict between the Departments of the Army and Navy, several small battles were actively fought within Forard, though they were usually publicized as "war games." These games had very real casualties as the two departments fought for dominance over the river forts. The Department of the Army emerged victorious, in no small part to Gallia's efforts. He was promoted to general for his endeavors, and given command of the training center at Mulat Keep.
From Mulat, Gallia was tied into the upper echelons of power, and he used his newfound popularity and influence to step up in administration. It was clear to all that he was the obvious successor to the previous Department Head, and he was voted in by his fellow generals in 1020. Since obtaining command, he has continued to advance the objectives of the Department of the Army and maintains a bitter resentment towards the Navy and the losses they incurred during the River War.
