House Durling

House Durling is the royal house of the Kingdom of Orrland. The family has ruled within the central Jakonian Peninsula for centuries, but have only recently emerged to significance thanks to the events of the Northern Rebellion. House Durling is a smaller house but has gained prominence for the wealth and prosperity they have brought to the people of Orrland since gaining independence.

Public Agenda

House Durling stands for the continuity of prosperity in the Kingdom of Orrland. They believe in the support and well being of adventurers who have created their own legends and success on the frontiers of Emicara. Durling leaders have offered a safe place for adventurers seeking retirement and a place to use their skills and spend their accumulated lucre from years of exploration. Politically, House Durling stands for peace on the Jakonian Peninsula and in recent years has attempted numerous times to negotiate peaceful settlements between the Nasites and the Jakonian Emperors and between Jakonia and Columba. Most of these efforts have been unsuccessful, but each has delayed a conflict a few more years.

Assets

At House Durling's beck and call are the myriad pleasures and delights of Universo. No other noble house in Emicara has the same access to exotic talents and tastes than the Durlings. Many of these come from across the world, obtained by adventurers who seek out a chance to show off their hard won trophies and abilities to the adoring public. The rent for this place of leisure, however, is that those who settle within Universo are obligated to help defend the city and the interests of House Durling. These adventurers can be called up upon to serve House Durling, bringing their skills to bear on anyone who could threaten the house's prosperity.

History

House Durling came into being after the War of Orrlander Succession, when the Jakonians placed friends and family upon the seats of the settlements seized during the war. The original founder of the house was a Jakonian soldier who distinguished himself in combat, saving the life of a member of House Jakson. He was rewarded with the city of Universo and the surrounding lands. He was assigned the task to observe and report upon the horrors of the nearby Terror Kingdom. In the years that followed, the founder and his successors spent much of their time and energy designing the fortifications and barriers that would enclose the Terror Kingdom to protect the surrounding lands from the creatures within. These efforts were successful in time but took over one hundred years and cost the lives of several heads of the house.   During the centuries of the Jakonian Empire, the Durlings for the most part proved themselves as loyal soldiers to the Empire. They provided the men and material needed for the success of the empire and its armies. The Durlings' wealth continued to grow and surge as Universo became the preeminent resort and relaxation destination for the growing and wealthy upper classes of Jakonia. The Battle of Conecuh Lake marked a turning point, as the head of the house and his three sons were all killed in the fight, and a distant cousin had to take the mantle of the house head.    After Conecuh Lake, the empire began to decline, and the upper classes had less money for luxuries and entertainment, and House Durling began to suffer. The lack of funds was reflected as Universo's infrastructure deteriorated throughout the ninth and tenth centuries, and House Durling was able to trim sails and enter into the hard times by blaming the emperors for mismanagement of the nation. These tones helped to preserve House Durling, as they managed to become a center of resistance against the empire, and ultimately leaders in the Northern Rebellion. As leaders in Orrland, they were the clear choice for the new kings of Orrland when the rebellion came to an end.    Having secured their position as monarchs in Orrland, the Durlings have found new wealth in the form of adventurers who have success stories from the frontier, and have opened their borders as a place for anyone to retire. Former wanderers can find all of the institutions and facilities they would need for a relaxing end to their adventures and homes catering to all tastes and styles. The Durlings have sought to preserve the status quo, hoping to maintain the wealth they have fought hard to obtain.
