Maximilian Grunfeld
King Maximilian Grunfeld
Maximilian Grunfeld was born to be the Lord of the Emerald Lordship. This land was a major industrial region for the Jakonian Empire, and the traditional heart of Columban culture and lands. When he became Lord, he worked hard for his lands, and was not unknown to actually assist directly in construction and labor that could take place within Leesburg and surrounding areas. He never was comfortable in the halls of the Empire, more among the working classes. He served directly in the shield wall of a Jakonian regiment, rather than just taking a position as an officer, on the front lines of the Forardi rebellion.
Having served in the regiments, Maximilian was angered greatly by the implementation of hostage policies, as his son ended up a hostage in Imperial hands. After his son's escape, Maximilian led several meetings among Columban nobles, making the plans for what would become the Northern Rebellion. The imperials had lost their leverage, and with that, the time was ripe for a war, as Maximilian led the unrest of the people and his peers to revolt against the dominance of the Jakonians. While initially the war was simply fought for better treatment of the Columbans, atrocities committed by the regiments against those they were supposed to protect soon escalated the conflict into a war for independence. Maximilian's ingenious tactics brought about the wall of the Fruitlands Wall, and freedom was dictated at sword point.
Maximilian was the clear pick by the Columbans to become king at the creation of the new nation. His popularity among the masses and his role in the collapse of the Fruitland Wall defenses earned him a very public position among his peers. He was elected by the nobles to become king, but his abrasive personality kept him out of most political maneuverings, and led to the monarchy being ceremonial at best. Unfortunately, he was still the face of the country, and a disagreement with the Forardis led to the outbreak of hostilities, and then war. He was a blunt instrument in these battles, proving to have less of a mind for open warfare than he did for sieges and was regularly outmaneuvered in combat. His death in a skirmish led to the abrupt end of his reign and the passing of the torch to his son.
