Raimund Grunfeld
King Raimund Grunfeld
Raimund Grunfeld was born as a noble in the declining days of the Jakonian Empire. He was educated by a private tutor within the Imperial City itself, held as a hostage for some time to ensure the good behavior of the Emerald Lordship by the Emperor. This was common practice for many Columban lords and nobles, as the Empire struggled to maintain its hold on outlying regions. Raimund grew to resent the Empire, and he escaped Imperial custody in 942, along with a number of other Columban nobles. The return of Raimund and the others to their families led to a tense situation, ultimately sparking the Northern Rebellion.
Raimund was too young to fight in the Northern Rebellion directly, but he did accompany his father as an aid in camp. He learned about the martial ways of combat, and studied tactics during the war. After the nation achieved independence, Raimund sought to forge a legacy of his own. He struck out as an adventurer, exploring sites throughout the Badlands and even traveling to the Sypi Confederacy. He even gained an association with the Alsonan Rangers, but he returned home in 959, with the initial warnings of the aggression of the Forardis and the war to come.
Raimund fought in the Forardi-Columban War with extreme valor, acting as a scout and spy for the Columban armies, and his escapades became legendary. When his father died in a skirmish against the Columbans, he was quick to return behind the lines and lead the army. He outmaneuvered the Forardis and established a reputation as a cunning trickster of a commander, always appearing for the Forardis least expected him. The Columbans were victorious in the war, driving the Forardis back and forcing reparations.
After the war with Forard ended, Raimund began assuming affairs of state, but found them a bit tedious for his liking. He turned over most tasks to nobles and other trusted advisors, while he frequently toured the nation or went on diplomatic visits to other states. He was welcomed by most other nations and built solid relationships, acting as a peacemaker, preventing war. He became highly popular, and led the nation right up until his death in 999, after a stroke led to rapid deterioration of his health and then death.
