King Paulus Grunfeld

Paulus Grunfeld was born in 954 to the heir of the young Columban throne. He was only seven years old when his grandfather, the first king, was killed in battle against the Forardis, and his father assumed the throne. After that point, he was subjected to ample training in both military and politics, as his father sought to make sure that Paulus would be more prepared to become king than he was. In adulthood, Paulus became a bit of an entrepreneur, always interested in increasing the family's wealth and investing in new businesses and industries throughout Columba. He proved highly successful, out-maneuvering even the high elves in business acumen. House Grunfeld was established as a good financial bet, and through the family's wealth, the kingdom was enriched.
When Paulus ascended to the throne in 999, he was faced with the need to withdraw from his businesses, in favor of tending to the affairs of state. He has proven an adept monarch, keeping a surplus of gold from taxation, while still managing to buffer the nation's economy to new heights. He has focused on keeping expenses low for the nation, and while this has led to some unpopularity among military advocates, he is greatly appreciated by merchants and nobles alike for allowing them to continue on with business with low regulation or oversight. Unfortunately, he seems to have lost support among the masses and the Church, who dislike the rapprochements he has made with the Mersan Union and Kingdom of Recfrere, and the apparent hoarding of treasure he has made.
He is towards the end of his life now, and he has three sons, any of whom could be a skilled contender for the throne. No one is truly sure what may happen upon the king's death, as it is clear that the continuation of the king is good for the economy and the nation. Some fear that a civil war may erupt when he is deceased, possibly leading to invasion from one of the kingdom's neighbors.
