Quico Bienombe
High Chief Quico Bienombe
Quico Bienombe was born to rule according to his own personal legend. He was the only son of the former chief of the Bienombe tribe. Before he was even fifteen years old, he was already an accomplished warrior, having participated in numerous raids into the Kingdoms of Forard and Bamard. His raids were consistently triumphant, returning with ample spoils, and adeptly evading the response forces of the kingdoms. His election upon his father's death at age seventeen was unsurprisingly, and no one even chose to stand against him in the tribal vote. He became chieftain with the full acclamation of his people, and promptly led the largest raid the tribe had ever launched, sacking the Bamardi town of Perdu.
His success in raids inevitably led to a rise in enemies arrayed against him. The Church of the One Sun particularly became an enemy, leading to them using assassins from the Fellowship of the Palm to attempt to eliminate his rising star. Ultimately they succeeded in turning his focus away from outside of the Confederacy's borders and focusing within instead. Despite the laws of the land, Quico attacked Church missionaries across the Confederacy, openly whenever possible, and covertly when not. The death of High Chief Ahuli Wicka in 1019 led to an opportunity for Quico to bring his war against the Church of the One Sun to an even larger scale, and he put his name in for the now vacant leadership position of the High Chief of the Sypi Confederacy.
As is the custom for candidates for High Chief, Quico hired a party of adventurers to represent him as delegates to bring honor to the Bienombe clan and secure enough votes. He was initially considered an outlying candidate, in contrast to the favorites belonging to the Wicka and Sihka candidates. Setyanga Sihka was considered to have enough popularity among the towns of the Confederacy to handily win the vote, with ample war chest contributed by the Church of the One Sun. Quico's mercenaries won the day however, securing enough votes, despite themselves falling into disrepute after the Burning of the Twenters. Quico Bienombe won by a plurality, instead of a clear majority, which would shape the troubles of the days to come.
Upon the day of coronation for Quico Bienombe, the Sihka Tribe and their supporters launched an attempted coup against the government, razing the Great Temple and nearly killing Quico Bienombe in the process. He survived the assassination attempt, but this overt attack and the destruction of the central spiritual location of the Confederacy launched the nation into a civil war. The tribes waged a relentless conflict upon each other, and several were destroyed in the years that followed. The Church of the One Sun provided ample support to the Sihkas, causing the war to drag on even longer than it would have otherwise. The Sypi Civil War at last came to an end in 1027, with Quico Bienombe's last victory over the Sihka stronghold.
The civil war over, Quico Bienombe was forced to turn towards reconstruction, providing the funds and resources to provide the towns of the nation with new buildings and business. He was unable to engage in his old pastime of raiding, as the forces of the Bienombe tribe, and the Confederacy as a whole, were clearly depleted. The return of new giant raids across the Sypi River led to attacks on several River Watch forts, and Bienombe's attention was once more diverted, although he gained new notoriety when he slew a hill giant in combat. He has since aged and settled down, marrying a tribeswoman from the Wicka Tribe, as a symbol of reconciliation. Where his temper was once fiery, he now is more taciturn and pragmatic in his reign over his people.
