Samuel Hayles
Lord Samuel Hayles
Samuel Hayles was the fourth born son of the current crop of leaders in House Hayles. As a youth, he did not initially expect to inherit anything or become a major player in Jakonian politics, and spent most of his time playing or at parties. He neglected his education, and found it to be a tedious bore, a trait that did not disappear as he rose to power. When he was twenty the second born son died during an exploratory expedition to the north, which was lost with all hands. The eldest brother, and then ruler of the house, died of an illness that clerics of the Church seemed unable to stop just a mere three years later. As his remaining older brother had renounced claims to the family's position of power, Samuel was given command of the House by default.
Having gained power in 1020 at the young age of twenty, Samuel found that his life to date had made him woefully unprepared for the hefty task of managing the affairs of the House. His cousins in Satsuma and Matanzas seemed eager for him to fail so that perhaps the family seat could pass to them instead. With the support and encouragement of his surviving brother, he rebuilt his life, married a healthy woman, and has had three children of his own. He has also focused upon the consolidation of House Hayles, bringing his cousins back into line. Efforts continue to be made to maintain power, and he has taken a particularly active role in suppressing the Nasites and their attempts at rebellion.
