Whakan Conino

Chief Whakan Conino

Whakan Conino is the chief of the Conino Tribe in the Sypi Confederacy. He was raised into a merchant family within the tribe, and he demonstrated brilliance quickly. Whakan proved the value of analysis and trading savvy, as even as a teenager, he was always able to win the best prices and value for his purchases and sales. The wealth of the family grew exponentially with his assistance, and he quickly took over the family business, and found his influence growing through his gold in the town of Smitlaw. The wealth he was making was undeniable, and he reinvested with the establishment of the Conino Resort along the trade road between Smitlaw and Grenadd. Offering luxuries acquired at first from the Shin Empire, and then later from Alsona, the Resort offered entertainment beyond what could normally be found in the Confederacy.   The resort was an astounding success, with travelers from as far away as Alsona and Losana venturing into the wild lands of the Confederacy to taste the delights Whakan had created. The wealth and hiring of skilled managers allowed Whakan to divert to his personal life, and focus on his family and preparations for his next endeavor. He learned from the greatest cunning masters of the Conino tribe and in 1006, he challenged the old chief to a Duel of Cunning, to present his abilities and skills. In this duel, Whakan humiliated the old chief, and sent him into disgrace. This success propelled him to the forefront of the tribe, and he maintained his position against similar duels in the decades to come.    Whakan was not satisfied merely with the wealth that leader of a tribe presented, but decided to make a bid for High Chief. When the last High Chief died in 1019, Whakan nominated himself for the position to compete against the contenders offered by the Sihka, Wicka, and Bienombe. He threw money around to the other tribes to help cement his position, but unfortunately for him, he was unable to build any loyal votes, and came away with the least votes of all four candidates. He returned home to sulk, which is how he learned of the Sihkas' attack upon the Great Temple and the beginning of the Sypi Civil War.    At first, Whakan refused to get involved in the war, declaring neutrality, but it only took a few months of Sihka attacks on trade routes for him to revise his position and pledge loyalty to the Bienombe cause. The money of the Coninos was used to finance the hiring of mercenaries to supplement the tribe's neighbors, and build an army from local adventurers, and even a dwarven regiment all the way from Kiralyno. These forces helped to win the day for the Confederacy, but came at a great cost for the Coninos, Many tribal encampments were destroyed and the resort had been razed by a Lewite force. What remained of the coffers were turned towards reconstruction. Today Whakan Conino continues to rebuild his legacy, and focus on his family as he restores the Conino reputation for luxury and entertainment.
