Succession War

Before the last Emperor died, he declared that his younger son, Roland, would be his heir.  After the Emperor died, the Empire split into two based on whether they supported the word of the old Emperor or followed with tradition to place the older brother, Archibald, on the throne.  The war lasted several years until it was discovered that Archibald was researching Tainted magic in order to use it as a weapon.  Popular opinion quickly turned against Archibald, allowing Roland to emerge victorious.

The Conflict

Prelude

Prior to his death on 20 Cuthbert 1151, Morgan Ironfist IV declared that Roland, his youngest son, would inherit his throne instead of his eldest son. This created a rift in court on who the Clans believed should rule.

Outcome

Archibald is defeated after he loses support from his allies. He is turned to stone and sealed within one of the towers of Castle Ironfist. Roland becomes Emperor and marries Catherine Gryphonheart.

Aftermath

Archibald's study into Tainted magic results in the rise of a form of blood magic that relies on using the Taint as a power source. With the Empire not entirely recovered after the war, it was slow to respond to the Night of Shooting Stars and only mounted a decent defense after survivors informed them of its seriousness.
