The Inquisition
The Inqusition is one of the holy orders that make up the Church of Illumination, the other being the Order of the Rising Sun. The Inquisition was founded not long after the Cult of Illumination spread across Albion, now rebranded as the "Church" of Illumination instead. During those times, Glimmer became widespread as news of magic travelled fast, and mages were beginning to test the boundaries of what was possible. This resulted in accidents, curses, and deaths. The Inquisition was founded to root out such wizards, sorcerers, and warlocks and make an example of them, which they achieved. To this day the Inquisition enjoys a ruthless reputation, that of judge and jury; torturers and executioners.
In recent years the Church has pulled on the reins of the Inquisition, mostly to appeal to wider masses and because Glimmer abuse has been localised mostly to cities. Prospective inquisitors often find themselves patrolling streets apprehending Glimmer addicts instead of mages, which in turn has led to a stall in their recruitment. Very few inquisitors remain, but those that do are respected and feared. An inquisitor has a blank cheque from the Church, and no one may bar their way nor arrest them. They are immune to local laws, and should any be brought against an inquisitor without good reason that region would feel the wrath of the Church, and possibly even excommunication - such as Enetia faced in 555 A.E.
