The Church of Dawn

The Church of Dawn is the most powerful powerful religious organization in the Kingdom of Edderan. They worship Pelor,  the Dawnfather, as their primary diety.  The church also worships the other 11 gods of The Celestial Court, but they view the Dawnfather as the supreme divine. It is believed that if one lives a life of both virtue and piety, they will go to the fields of Elysium when they die and be eternally happy in the afterlife.

The Church's power is second only to the the crown within the kingdom, and they enforce their doctrine through their justiciars. They hold sway in the royal court, and have their largest temple located in the kingdom's capital, Stormhaven.

History

The Church of Pelor was formed a millennium ago by Pelor's most devout followers. They believed only through the Dawnfather would they find salvation. At the time, this was a rather controversial view, as many believed that the Celestial Court should be worshiped a whole, despite Pelor being their leader.  The founders of the church thought differently. They believed that the other gods served the Dawnfather, and that they should follow their example in the worship of him as their prime diety.

Tenets of Faith

The Tenets of Light

Pelor is the founder. Without his light, nothing would be possible.
One shall not put other gods before him, for he is the first, the sovereign.
Show Pelor's light to places of darkness, offering compassion, healing and charity to those in need.
Establish order to the chaos that engulfs the world.
Bring the wrath of the Sun Father to the evil and unholy.

Ethics

The Celestial Court

Worshipers of the Dawnfather shall find also comfort within the gods of his Court.
One may not put any of the Divine Court above Pelor.

Other Gods

Followers reject Gods outside The Celestial Court , believing that only through Pelor and the Court can they find salvation. Followers of outside gods are considered heretics. Witchcraft, necromancy, and blood magic are all strictly forbidden in the eyes of the Church of Pelor. If suspected of practicing the dark arts, one should expect the wrath of the temple's Justiciars and soon after burnt at the stake.

Worship

The Tome of Light

The Tome of Light is the holy book of Pelor. It is commonly found in the possession of priests and justiciars alike, and writen inside are the tenants and teachings of the God of Light. It is said that the High Priest holds the original tome, transcribed by Pelor himself as a gift to the mortal world.

Sects

The Priests of Pelor

The Priests are the followers who reside in the Temples of Light. They are the healers and lore keepers. They deliver sermons to the common folk, and offer aid to the lost and weary.

The Justiciars of Pelor

The Justiciars are the faith's military force. Led by the Arbiter of Light, the Justiciars of Pelor slay demons, monsters and worshipers of wicked entities. They are usually feared by the common folk, as their authority overrules most of the kingdoms soldiers and city guard.

The Witch Hunters

The witch hunters root out witches, heretics and practitioners of the dark arts.  Their authority comes from the High Priests themselves. A witch hunter would rather burn down a village filled with innocents than let them be tainted by the unholy, saving their soul's at the very least.
