The light holds back the darkness.— Joran
Joran, the god of balance, was known to carry two swords: the sword of darkness and the sword of light. Joran called them by what they wanted for: Everything (Darkness) and Nothing (Light). Everything consumes everything- even the light itself, which is why it appears as darkness. Nothing is it's opposite, it radiates energy causing it to glow. Due to their light bending properties, no ones knows exactly what they look like.
The swords are kept under the watch of Joran's
Chief Justice. They are displayed above the alter in the heart of the
Free City of Joran. The clergy teach that the swords are both a gift and a test. As they are Joran's will made tangible, they are only balanced together. They warn that the swords must always be hung together with Nothing always crossed over Everything; the light holding back the darkness. As long as the light is before the darkness, it will be kept at bay- satiated.
If the sword of light is ever removed from its place, the darkness will call out to souls that contain any darkness of their own. It is warned that these souls will try to use the darkness for their own ends, but the sword will consume them, soul and all, and then move on to another host. It will go on until it consumes the world.
It has been foretold that someone will covet the limitless power of the light, ignoring the Justice's warning that it cannot be harnessed for selfish whims. If this comes to pass, the darkness will have a chance to find its ultimate host, one that can withstand its withering impact, and consume the world. The only Nothing will be able to stop the darkness.
