The Magical Triad

The Academies have categorised all magic on Eroedon into three distinct "divisions" based on the source of their magical power. They call this the Magical Triad.

First Division - Arcane

The Arcane Division derives its magical power from sheer intellect and research augmented by the mineral Mysticite . Wizards, artificers, and magic-wielding rogues and bards fall under the First Division.   The First Division has been at the forefront of Colandria's technological progress. At the same time, the Academies compete for influence and contribute significantly to the Kingdom's economy.    Arcane welders often see themselves as superior to Second and Third Division magic users.   Arcane casters draw power from Mysticite and must replenish its power by resmelting it regularly.  Portable [Resmelter]  are employed in the field, or resmelting can be obtained in town guild halls and artifacers.

Second Division - Patronised

Clerics, warlocks, some sorcerers (very few) and paladins receive power from a patron being or deity, placing them in the Second Vision of the Magical Triad.   Some Second Division wielders are familiar with their patron, while others may never know who their patron is. However, they all possess magical abilities not based on knowledge or nature.   Patronised casters receive their magical power by way of a Partonal Foci.  Replenishing their Foci through a devotional ritual or commune is essential to maintaining their power and ability.

Third Division - Wild

Wielders such as druids, rangers, certain sorcerers, the Genesi's natural abilities and certain Elven magic derive their power from the environment. This is referred to as the Third Division.   Wild-based magic wielders are often misunderstood and feared by Academies , because they can execute powerful magic using only the world around them, often in innate ability rather than gifted or acquired.     Third Division casters carry their power in the form of Primal Runes which are replenished by drawing from the world around them when resting.
