The Sanctorium

The Sanctorium is the grand library of the Northern Isles, located in Janney. originally built in 1126AG.

The above-ground structure of the Sanctorium is a green marble building surrounded by wide-set of white stone stairs. Its outer walls are decorated with elaborate frescoes and sculptures that depicted five Deities - Ioun (the Knowing Mistress), Sune (Goddess of Beauty and Grace), Ekala (The Single One), Cyrrollalee (Goddess of Hospitality) and Romane (Goddess of Friendship).
The facade is altered on the celebration of each new year, by means of magic, to show new scenes that occurred the year prior.

The entry hall of the library is often bustling with activity, as the scribes and mages sit studiousily reading at large desks. They always have some scholarly duties that require to be performed. Novice scribes are enlisted to transcribe documents and perform other less-than-exciting tasks. The amount of energy that all the library's scribes pour into their work is truly exceptional.

It is funded by nominal fees that are charged for the scribes' work in conjunction with generous donations put forth by the wealthier citizens of the Northern Isle.

Interior
Within the marble structure of the Sanctorium is a long entry hall that features statues that depicted Elves, Human, Dwarves, Dragonborn, Tiefling, Halfling, Half-Elf, Gnome, Tabaxi and many of the other races of Esau.

Services
A single figure, always a person who is a follower of Ioun, sits at a lone desk within the entry hall to greet visitors and retrieve books and documents from within the Sanctorium's vaults.
Show spoiler
The true size of the collections found within the chambers is unknown - no one is fully aware of everything it had to offer, to all outside the staff of The Sanctorium.

While petitioners are seldom denied access to a particular tome or scroll - Few are free to wander the library.

The only people allowed within the chambers unaccompanied, are certain mages and those who have earned such a honour.

THE FIRE

In 1198AG, an army of orcs and Bugbears sailed from Fogi Island, landing in Janney. The library was ramsacked and set on fire. Only those tomes and scrolls protected by various Types of Magic remained undamaged. Most of the rest was never recovered.

BENEATH

After fire of 1198AG, the library was rebuilt. Beneath the library hall are three subterranean levels that housed its grand collection of documents.

Purpose / Function

A grand library that stored vast collections of tomes and scrolls.
Librarians serving Ioun care for all contained within.

Tourism

At least once in their lives, every devout follower of Ioun, throughout Esau, make a pilgrimage to The Sanctorium, though few get past the entry level.
The magical gate spell only allowed few specific people - mainly notes and texts are passed between the underneath levels and the building above ground - so that copies of texts can be lent to visitors.
