Nemeon
Nemeon is a god of power, ambition and strategy, but he is also synonymous with tyranny, cruelty, and domination.
In some cultures, such as the Mazkran Empire, Nemeon is appeased - the people recognise him as dangerous and indeed, evil, though they prefer to keep him contented rather than provoke him. Elsewhere, such as in the Kingdom of Galdra and the other Successor States, Nemeon is publically reviled, seen as enemy of their way of life.
Temples of Nemeon are almost non-existent in cultures that shun him - though rumour has it that many conduct secret services. In Mazkras, his temples are common; circular structures with sacrificial altars suspended above basins for collecting the blood of offerings. Human sacrifices are rare, and by all accounts, the victims of these blood rituals offer themselves willingly.
Nemeon is sometimes referred to as 'Hellkeeper' or 'The Devil'.
Divine Domains
Nemeon's primary domains are Evil, Law, Trickery and Fire. His subdomains are Blood, Deception, Devil and Inevitable.
Holy Books & Codes
Nemeon is associated with two different holy books. The first, the Book of the Damned, was allegedly penned by his own hand. It details his discoveries on the fundamental properties of magic, souls and dreams, and his efforts to manipulate these forces against the powers of The Void. The book is lost to history.
The second, the Neminex, was written by his earliest disciples. It recounts stories of Nemeon's power, the rituals necessary to please him, and prophecies for the end of Esharra. It is the most sacred text in the Mazkran Empire.
Divine Symbols & Sigils
Those that abhor Nemeon depict him very differently to those that appease him. The detractors represent Nemeon as a goat-humanoid hybrid, black or red in colour, with fearsome horns, fangs and claws, often with bat-like wings and a serpent tail. In contrast, his appeasers show him as a handsome human male, dressed crisply in the black robes of a lawyer, with streaks of blood red running through his long dark hair. In both cases, Nemeon’s eyes are black like polished obsidian.
In most traditions, Nemeon is an enemy of Tane, and lost his right hand to him in a duel (Tane, in turn, lost his left hand). As such, Nemeon is often depicted with a right fist made from gold or iron. He is said to favour left-handed worshippers.
Nemeon's iconography makes frequent use of a ram's skull to represent the deity, though more surrealistic horned monsters are also common. The ram is indeed sacred to Nemeon, owing to its role as chattel in bartering contracts.
Nemeon's favoured weapon is the whip.
His mystic card is The Devil, and his holy number is 15.
Tenets of Faith
Followers of Nemeon believe that everything in the universe is linked by a mysterious force that unites matter, energy, magic, souls and dreams, called mana. Mastery of mana is to achieve mastery over everything, but it is a path many are too afraid to tread, especially Nemeon's great enemy, Tane.
Therefore for great minds to succeed, those lacking the vision and courage to unpack the secrets of the universe must be defeated, and enslaved.
Holidays
The eleventh month, Nemester - the Month of Lawmakers - is named after Nemeon. It is a time for renewing contracts, and striking bargains.
Divine Goals & Aspirations
Nemeon styles himself as the only deity cunning and brave enough to battle the chaos of The Void. The other gods must be dethroned and banished in order that the true battle for existence can be waged.
