Nighthold

Nighthold is a terrifying place to eke out an existence, constantly under siege from shadow dragons from The Darklands to the west. The population here is mostly comprised of dwarves, elves and the last remnants of the Ironwolf tribe of dragonborn who work together tirelessly to defend their town. It is one of the most heavily fortified places in the known world and is surrounded by a 120ft reinforced wall topped with huge magically enchanted ballistae. These powerful weapons can split a boulder in two from 1000 ft and the weapons teams that operate them are known to have a monthly competition for the number of kills they can get. The population here regularly brag that they could hold off the whole world from behind their walls.
The city is built close to a cliff edge, making the city itself only about 100ft across. Instead, the homes, taverns and shops are built into the side of the huge wall making it almost impervious to attack from the sky. Atop the wall, a mesh of adamantine is strung across to the cliff face like a huge net making the city inaccessible from above.
The city of Nighthold does conform to the laws set out by the council in Gloomwrought but mostly because they rely heavily on the southern towns for food. Nothing grows in the soil this far to the north and their livestock are regularly taken by swarms of dragons. Deep below the city is a huge mine which is known to hold veins of adamantine and cold iron, the former is used to reinforce the armour of the guards and the latter used to craft the heads of the huge 10ft bolts used in the ballistae. They rarely trade their resources with other settlements but have been known to gift these rare metals to heroes or adventurers who have proven their worth.
