The Dreadlands

The dreadlands is a truly horrifying place. The inhabitants of the Shadowfell know well to stay clear of this area as it is now overrun with the dead. Tormented spirits on their way to the Fortress of Memories are lured into this land by whispers from Barovia. Whispers telling them they can avenge their death or see a long lost loved one again. As the spirit leaves the river and heads towards these whispers, they become more and more twisted and corrupted. The bright light they used to emanate fades until they are indiscernible from the very shadows of the Shadowfell itself. The strongest and cruellest of these souls twist and form into shadow horrors and shadow lurkers, terrifying beasts that feed on the nightmares of their prey. Huge areas of this land are covered in magical darkness that renders even the brightest light useless almost as if the very air itself sucks the energy from any natural light source. It is said that whatever being, god, or creature that inhabits Barovia is so powerful that it strikes fear into the Raven Queen herself. Never has a Shadar-Kai been sent into the dreadlands by her and they pray that this continues.
