Disaster / Destruction
No one truly knows what caused the Isthmus Incident of 1011, but the destruction of the land connection between Norge and mainland Evantian was a turning point in the history of the Mark. The Isthmus Incident began what was known as the Period of Chaos.
There are many theories for what caused the Isthmus Incident of 1011, early after the event, it was thought that agents from Dithmarburg had caused the incident. Other theories suggested the work of demons and/or devils, or dark magic, while more recent suggestions are naturally occuring earthquakes or storms gradually weakening before a larger one delt the final blow. However ultimatly no one really knows what caused it.
The connection to Balton was before the incident, a vital piece of land for Norge, being prime hunting and fishing land the likes of which have never been seen since, and containing the then capital city of the Kingdom of Norge. Ultimatly the most valuable lands were destroyed in the early suns of the incident, while taking a full six suns for the chaos to calm down.
The full damage of the Isthmus Incident is still unknown to this day, with some conservative estimates of the deathtoll being around 2 million. Trade was disrupted across the Northern Seas and some simply left east following the event, never returning to Norge or Evantian as a whole, while Norge would be plunged into the Period of Chaos for the next 75 years. Making the Isthmus Incident one of the touchstone events in the formation of the Republic of the Mark.
