Drow

In the final centuries of the Age of Arcanum, the influence and power of the Prime Deities seemed increasingly irrelevant to many. Prominent scholars argued that mortals had ascended to such heights of magical power that they no longer needed the gods. Many elves, in particular, nursed a grievance against Corellon, the Arch Heart, feeling that their parent had abandoned them and was no longer a presence in their lives.   When the Betrayer Gods broke free from their extraplanar prisons and kicked off The Calamity, these wayward elves found themselves punished en masse : their skin altered, their hair bleached, their beautiful eyes made to glow like fiery red orbs, and, most humiliating of all, they were no longer able to walk comfortably in the sun. Fleeing into the underdark, these embittered elves - now dubbed drow or dark elves - were ripe for the whisperings of Lolth, the Spider Queen. The Spider Queen taught them how to survive in the endless dark, that the only worthy aspirations were dominance and pleasure, and that it was Corellon who had abandoned them, not the other way around. The drow rallied to her side, and her adopted children engaged in endless wars of conquest and raids for slaves to satiate her bottomless appetites.   During The Divergence, however, The Spider Queen's power was temporarily weakened. It was at this moment that Leylas Kryn, the future Bright Queen, found a Luxon Beacon buried deep in the underdark. It revealed to her new mysteries of the cosmos. Under the guidance of The Luxon, Leylas gathered loyalists, organized them into "dens," and began the trek to the surface to found a new society in the ruins of Ghor Dranas.   Most drow still extant today continue to live far below Exandria's surface, in the underdark, where the Spider Queen has regained her influence. They are seen on the surface during slave raids, if at all. Others, however, form the backbone of Kryn Dynasty society, continuing to hold most positions of import in that realm. The drow of Xhorhas are respectful toward people of all races—including other elves—as they believe that their holy cycle of rebirth allows them to be reborn into non-drow bodies. The empathy to be gained by experiencing life in another body is crucial to their religion and their culture.
